Fast Facts and 2016 College Directory 2 Letter from the Commissioner Every day, the 22 individual colleges that make up the Technical College System of Georgia work to ensure a quality education is delivered to our state's students. Each college plays a pivotal role in local workforce development and in contributing to Georgia's economy. Together, we serve Georgia as a workforce development agency, by providing companies with skilled workers and, at the same time, providing a better way of life to our students through richly fulfilling career pathways. Under Governor Deal's leadership, Georgia is taking an aggressive, multi-faceted approach, partnering with state agencies as well as private organizations and businesses to find innovative solutions that ensure a workforce pipeline for Georgia companies. These solutions enable us to meet students where they are in their lives, and we see them play out in initiatives like dual enrollment, grants for free tuition in strategic industries and much more. As the state's top resource for workforce, TCSG is proud to be a part of the network of public and private partners addressing the skills gap. In addition to thanking the Governor and the Legislature for their continued support, I applaud the presidents of each of our colleges, their boards, and their entire teams for their accomplishments during the 2015 academic year. Your continual work to champion and support our students is unmatched, and is changing lives on a daily basis. It is an honor to be a part of your team. Sincerely, Gretchen Corbin, Commissioner 3 Technical Education 22 colleges 85 campuses 28 Articulation Agreements 600 Degree Diploma & Certificate Programs 6,123* 9,479* Associate Diplomas Degrees 31,608** Total Graduates 36,352* Technical Certificates of Credit 51,954* Total Awards Conferred Unduplicated Graduates Up * duplicated ** unduplicated 7.6% 4 Technical Education Total Enrollment 135,786 2,093,499 credit hours 69,783 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) 64,744 Online Enrollment Financial Aid $ 78,904 Pell Recipients 74,273 HOPE Recipients $89 $1,335 per credit hour Tuition for Guaranteed Education 15 hour semester TCSG graduates are guaranteed to be proficient in TCSG-taught competencies or we will retrain them at no cost. 5 State GOAL Winner 2015 TCSG Student of the Year Stephanie Quinn Jackson, a 2015 graduate of the Paralegal Studies program at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, is the Technical College System of Georgia's 2015 Student of the Year. She competed for the top student honor as part of the system's annual Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) program, which recognizes the best students at each of the state technical colleges and one Board of Regents college with a technical division. Stephanie chose technical education because she believes it offers flexible, convenient and affordable education, blending skilled trade with the nuances specific to real world careers. Prior to making the decision to return to school after 15 years, Stephanie, a single mom, spent five years as a self-employed writer, caring for her two sons and trying to make ends meet. She now says, "I wouldn't be here if I only believed in what I thought was possible. We must take a shot at what seems impossible." In addition to advocating for technical education, Stephanie has served as an intern with the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia (ACLU) and is now working as a paralegal in the Office of the Attorney General of Georgia. 6 State GOAL Winner Stephanie Jackson Paralegal Studies `15 Georgia Piedmont Technical College "Technical education makes us realize that what we thought we would never achieve is well within our grasp." 7 Dual Enrollment 11,731 Dual Enrollment Students The New "Move on When Ready Act" of 2015 changed dual enrollment in Georgia, streamlining the process and providing more robust funding for both colleges and schools. The legislation became effective July 1, 2015, and dual enrollment in Georgia has steadily risen, from 5,100 students in AY12 to more than 11,000 students in AY15. Career Academies 33 Academies 15K students served $93million State Investment 8 Incentivized Education Complete College Georgia The skills gap that exists within the U.S. has not exempted Georgia. Within five years, more than 60 percent of jobs in our state will require a college certificate or degree, but currently only 42 percent of young adults have them. Governor Deal and higher education leaders are addressing this critical need through Complete College Georgia, with the goal of graduating 250,000 additional students from our technical colleges and our universities by 2025. Through initiatives that encourage students with some college to return to school and graduate, offer free tuition in strategic industries, and expanded dual enrollment, TCSG is assisting the state in fulfilling the workforce needs in the strategic industries identified by the Governor's High Demand Career Initiative. Christian worked for a number of years in the motorsports industry as a mechanic, pit crew chief and professional race car driver. In addition to holding a diploma in Motorsports Vehicle Technology from Lanier Tech, Christian also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master's of Education, both from UGA. He chairs Lanier Tech's Complete College Georgia committee and serves on a number of faculty committees. He has touched countless lives through his work at the college and his service to the community. Christian knows first-hand about the life-changing power of technical education. His father escaped from Communist-controlled East Germany and worked to earn passage on a ship to the United States. All he possessed when he arrived was his technical education as a welder. It was this one skill that enabled Christian's father to build his future. Fifty years later, Christian is committed to helping others build their own future by teaching at a technical college. Fun Fact: Christian himself was once a graduate of the program that he now directs and is a professional race car driver. 10 State Rick Perkins Award Winner Christian Tetzlaff Motorsports Vehicle Technology Lanier Technical College "I choose to teach at a technical college because what we really do is change lives! As the State EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education) winner, Justin serves as a role model to motivate Georgians to improve their lives through education. Justin enrolled in Adult Ed because he wanted a second chance at education. In 2013, he joined a program at Georgia Piedmont that allowed him the opportunity to both earn his GED and a Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) in Welding. To fulfill his long-term goal of obtaining a bachelor's degree and becoming a teacher, he then enrolled in Georgia Piedmont's Early Childhood Care and Education diploma program. Justin went on to become Vice President of Membership for the Georgia Piedmont Technical College Student Government Association. He is a certified personal trainer and supports his community by volunteering as an athletic coach at local parks and recreation centers.
