During the same time, the number of full-time equivalent students grew by 47%. That's a 50% increase in instruction hours in just three years. The Great Recession has been a factor in TCSG enrollment: large numbers of the unemployed and underemployed have enrolled in the TCSG colleges to train for new, in-demand careers. As a result, there's been a corresponding increase in the number of older students at TCSG colleges: Age Under 21 21-25 26-30 31-35 36-40 Over 40 FY08 41,459 34,649 20,976 15,144 11,807 21,955 FY11 45,754 46,698 28,316 20,474 16,696 31,278 % Increase +10% +35% +35% +35% +42% +42% Today, more Georgia high school grads are making the TCSG a first choice: in a 2009 report from the Georgia Governor's Office of Student Achievement, TCSG colleges ranked among the top 10 most popular post-secondary choices for high school graduates in 165 Georgia school systems, and a technical college education was the first choice for graduates in 62 of those school systems. They earn high school and technical college credits at the same time, and most of the costs are paid for by the state. page 4 TCSG Fast Facts Main Menu TCSG colleges are adaptable to any student's schedule: 47% of TCSG students attended full-time in FY11, while 53% attended part-time. TCSG students are learning online, too: 84,969 students enrolled in the TCSG's Georgia Virtual Technical College courses in FY11; they received almost one million credit hours of online instruction. Chattahoochee Technical College (Chattahoochee Tech, N. Metro Tech, Appalachian Tech) 2. Georgia Northwestern Technical College (Coosa Valley Tech, Northwestern Tech) 3. Southeastern Technical College (Southeastern Tech, Swainsboro Tech) 4. Southern Crescent Technical College (Griffin Tech, Flint River Tech) 5. West Georgia Technical College (West Georgia Tech, West Central Tech) 6. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (Valdosta Tech, East Central Tech) 7. Oconee Fall Line Technical College (Sandersville Tech, Heart of Georgia Tech) The TCSG college mergers make good education and business sense: altogether, the mergers save Georgia taxpayers $7.5 million annually in administrative costs while increasing student access to a wider range of learning opportunities. No colleges were closed and all of the pre-merger campuses remain vitally important to the students, businesses and communities that they serve. The TCSG converted from quarters to semesters in Fall 2011: the TCSG is bringing Georgia closer to the goal of seamless education with a new calendar and semester credit hour alignment that makes it easier for students to transfer to other Georgia colleges and universities. The TCSG now joins the 80% of all U.S. colleges and universities that use semesters. Semesters provide added education opportunities: with semesters, TCSG students now have more time to master course material and they can delve more deeply into course content. They also enhance their skills with longer internships, clinicals and other forms of hands-on learning. The semester calendar alignment also enhances dual and joint enrollment opportunities for Georgia's high school students who are looking to jump start their college education. TCSG college tuition is affordable The TCSG is a bargain when it comes to a quality college education: in fall semester 2011, the cost for a standard credit hour at a TCSG college was $75. The average tuition for a full semester course load at a TCSG college in FY12 will be $1,125, which is among the lowest in the southeast. Grants make a TCSG education even more affordable: Georgia's HOPE grant and scholarship and the federal Pell grant will pay for most of a TCSG education; the number of TCSG students using HOPE (mostly in grants) or Pell grew substantially between FY08 and FY11. Many TCSG students are eligible to use both HOPE and Pell to pay for their college education. TCSG programs supply the workforce for Georgia's strategic industries: TCSG colleges offer programs related to the six industries that the Commission for a New Georgia identified as needed to keep Georgia competitive in the global economy: aerospace, healthcare, life sciences including biotechnology, agribusiness, energy and the environment, and logistics and transportation. Two in five TCSG students are enrolled in strategic industry programs: 40% of TCSG students are enrolled in programs related to careers in Georgia's strategic industries. In fact, programs related to the healthcare sector are the number one field of study for TCSG students. TCSG graduates are headed to the workforce: 35,034 TCSG students graduated with either technical certificates of credit, diplomas or associate degrees in FY11. Each year, TCSG grads are helping to bridge the nation's skills gap by filling jobs that require 21st Century skills and knowledge. And the TCSG is building an international outreach: the TCSG International Center for Technical Education works with countries and colleges that want to develop and improve their technical workforce through education partnerships and the sharing of people, programs and best practices. page 7 TCSG Fast Facts Main Menu Total TCSG Graduates in FY11: 35,034 Technical Certificates of Credit Diplomas Associate Degrees Total Awards Conferred* *some students earned multiple awards 30,957 12,274 5,748 *48,979 The job placement rate for TCSG grads is outstanding: A review of Georgia Department of Labor data shows the job placement rate for TCSG graduates is almost 80%; additional college data indicates that the placement rate rises to above 90% when self-employed entrepreneurs and students who continue their college education are included. Since 1967, the TCSG's Quick Start program has developed training systems for a wide range of state, national and international companies that have either relocated or expanded their operations in Georgia. Quick Start is the best workforce training program in the nation: Quick Start has consistently ranked at the top among all the states in workforce training over the last 10 years. In FY11, executives from companies such as King's Hawaiian, Toyo Tire, Firth Rixson, Kia, NCR and others cited Quick Start as one of Georgia's most unique assets for economic development. Quick Start attracts international businesses: 30% of Quick Start's projects in FY11 were with international companies. Business and industry employees trained by Quick Start in FY11: 98,544 employees Jobs either created or saved in Georgia through Quick Start in FY11: 13,658 jobs Global companies talk about Quick Start Quick Start...was a key to Toyo deciding to locate in Georgia. There isn't anything I've seen in the country like Quick Start. When I told the company everything Quick Start ... had done, the chairman said, "Build your building. And do it in Rockmart." Quick Start...was a major factor in our decision to come to Georgia. The state of Georgia may not realize the jewel they have in Quick Start. It is ... a differentiator. page 9 TCSG Fast Facts Main Menu TCSG Office of Adult Education Educating Georgia's adult learners The TCSG Office of Adult Education provides adult education programs that enable adult learners to study for and earn a GED diploma. GED graduates can transition to a college education and improve their lives and standing in Georgia's workforce and their local community. Tens of thousands of students are served: in FY11, more than 82,000 Georgia adult learners took part in Adult Basic and Secondary Education, GED instruction and testing, and English as a Second Language programs. GED diplomas awarded: 19,006 students earned their GED diplomas in calendar year 2010. According to the US Census Bureau's 2011 Statistical Abstract: a person with a high school or GED diploma earns approximately $10,000 more annually than a non-high school graduate. Georgia's 2010 class of GED graduates saw their combined earnings increased by almost $170 million dollars. The goal is a fully literate Georgia, but there is work to be done: it's estimated that 1.2 million adults over the age of 18 in Georgia have less than a high school education. There are 29 counties where more than 30% of adults do not have a high school or GED diploma: page 10 TCSG Fast Facts Main Menu Adult Education enrollment FY06 - FY11 120,000 100,000 97,306 80,000 84,427 90,567 95,218 91,704 82,428 60,000 40,000 20,000 0 FY 2006 FY 2007 FY 2008 FY 2009 FY 2010 FY 2011 Adult Education GED graduates 1999 - 2010 30,000 225,000 GPEaDst d12ipYloeamrsa-s22a5w,0a0r0dGeEdDisn 12 years 25,000 24,646 20,000 19,042 18,073 15,000 18,087 18,352 19,735 17,261 18,049 19,696 19,313 19,006 13,220 10,000 5,000 0 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 page 11 TCSG Fast Facts Main Menu The TCSG provides a threefold return on taxpayer investment An excellent return on dollars invested: despite shrinking state appropriations, the Technical College System of Georgia continues to provide the state with an outstanding return on its investment.
