From 1721 until 17:x;, Fort King Ge:,ige was the southern outpost of the Br~ish Empire in North America. A cypress blockhouse, barracks and palisade:l earthen fort weo, construct.e:1 in 1721 by scoutmen loo by Colonel John "Tusca,ora Jack" Barnwell. For the next.even years, His Majesty's Independent Company garrisoned the fort. They endu o,d incredible haidships f,om disease, threats of Spanish and Indian attacks, and the harsh, unfamiliarcoastal environment. After the fort was abandoned, General James Oglethorpe brought Scottish Highlanders 1o the s~ in 17:x;_ The settlement, called Darien, eventually bG.came a foremostex~rt center of lumber until 1925.
