In 1847, John FinJarrell built a simple heart p,ne house typical or most planta11ons and made many or the furnishings v1s1tors see today In 186o. the 6ooacrc plantation was farmed by l9 slaves After the Civil War. John increased his land to nearly 1.000 acres farmed by former slaves As John aged. most workers left and the slave houses deteriorated and disappeared 
After John's death. his son. Dtck Jarrell. gave up teaching to return to the fam1. and in 1895, he built a small house for his family that grew 10 12children Did. diversified the farm. adding a sawmill. co11on g,n. grrstmtll. shingle mtll. planer. sugar cane press. syrup evaporator. workshop. barn and ouibu1ld1ngs In 1974. his descendants donmed 1hese buridings to establish Jarrell Plantauon State Historic Site.
