For the past 10 years, Georgia's Annual River Cleanup has seen tremendous growth. 
 
Initiated by Curtis Farrar, a past DNR Board member, the cleanup has developed into an 
 
I 
 
event with support from a multitude of organizations, both private and government. In it's present manifestation, the cleanup is called Rivers Alive, Georgia's Annual Volunteer 
 
Waterway Cleanup. 
 
I 
 
The first cleanup was organized by the DNR Wildlife Division and held in 1992. This 
 
"statewide" cleanup focused attention on the Oconee, Ocmulgee, Satilla, and Alapaha 
 
I 
 
watersheds. In 1993, organization of the cleanup was divided among the various divisions within DNR: Wildlife Resources, Environmental Protection, Coastal, and Water Resources. 
 
I 
 
The DNR encouraged participation throughout all State waterways. 
 
In the mid 90's, Georgia Adopt-A-Stream became the lead program spearheading the annual 
 
I 
 
river cleanup. It is important to note that throughout the 90's other government and nongovernment organizations conducted cleanup events at different times of the year, focusing 
 
on particular regions or watersheds within the State. However, there was no collaboration 
 
I 
 
between government and non-governmental entities. 
 
In 1999, a significant change occurred - the various 
 
I 
 
cleanup organizations throughout the State unified for 
 
the first time to form Rivers Alive. The rationale was that 
 
I 
 
there would be many advantages to forming a single, unified cleanup event: the primary advantage being the 
 
solicitation of private donations from corporations to 
 
I 
 
support our cleanup organizers and volunteers. 
 
Previous river cleanup events in Georgia have been 
 
I 
 
successful. However, they pale in comparison to the success that has been achieved by Rivers Alive. The graphs on the following pages illustrate 
 
I 
 
how the cleanups have grown since the program was conceived in 1992. Take note of the dramatic improvements witnessed in all areas since the 1999 unification of all statewide 
 
cleanup events under Rivers Alive. 
 
I 
 
2002 was no different. With over 120 events scheduled, Rivers Alive 2002 made its mark 
 
across Georgia with over 780 miles of waterways cleaned and over 300,000 pounds of 
 
I 
 
garbage removed. 2002 was also the 30th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act, which served 
 
I

 as Rivers Alive 2002's theme - Clean Water: Make it Georgia's Future - and was a key component in our messaging to the public. Rivers Alive also teamed up with the Georgia River of Words, an International Art and Poetry Project designed to nurture respect and understanding of the natural world. Children are encouraged to learn their ecological address by honing their observation skills and then through poetry and art, describe their own sense of place. River of Words is a K-12 watershed study sparked by former US Poet Laureate, Robert Hass. In 2002, Rivers Alive used three drawings and two poem created by Georgia students that participated in the project on promotional materials. 
However, 2002 was a flat year for the number of volunteers. Initial estimates were very promising predicting over 20,000 volunteers but increased rainfall, the threat of West Nile and general liability concerns kept the numbers lower than 2001. Efforts are in place for 2003 to surpass the 2001 numbers.

In addition to cleaning our streams and rivers, cleanup events now include a diversity of 
 
activities such as watershed festivals, stream bank stabilization projects, watershed and 
 
nonpoint source education, riverboat tours, wastewater

treatment facility tours and environmental education 
 
workshops. 
 
The annual cleanup is dependent on a strong volunteer base of citizens, concerned about and prepared to take action to clean their local waterways. Proof of this can be seen in the number of organizers participating in this year's cleanup and the diverse representation we have on our Rivers Alive Advisory Board who put in countless hours assisting with this program so it can be the best. 
 
Participating corporate sponsors provide statewide funding making possible the production and distribution of Rivers Alive T-shirts to all volunteers. For Rivers Alive 2002, 21 corporations donated funding totaling $77,500. They included AT&T, BASF, Beers Skanska, BellSouth, Canon USA, Inc., Clean Water Campaign, The Coca-Cola Company, CVS Pharmacy, Inc., Direct Access International, GEMC Georgia Magazine, Georgia Pacific, The Home Depot, International Paper, Meadwestvaco Coated Board

 Division, Miller Brewing Company, Mohawk Industries, Inc., Oglethorpe Power Corporation, Plum Creek Timber Company Inc., Six Continents Hotels, UPS and Waste Management. Contributors to Rivers Alive include Jameson Inns and Ford Motor Company. The sponsors of the 11th Annual Cleanup not only provided generous funding for Rivers Alive, but many also work to promote, organize and participate in local cleanup efforts within their communities and among their employees. Other sponsors of the statewide campaign include: Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division's Adopt-A-Stream Program, Georgia Department of Community Affairs' Keep Georgia Beautiful and Affiliates, Altamaha Riverkeeper, Bellsouth Pioneers, Columbus Waterworks/Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, Georgia Forestry Commission, Georgia Wildlife Federation, Lake Lanier Shore Sweep, Peavine Watershed Alliance, Georgia Project WET/River of Words, and Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. Despite the tremendous success we have experienced, there is still room to grow. There is every indication that we can continue to expand our program in 2003!

 Volunteers keep Georgia's rivers flowing 
 
You might not thin k twice :ibout seeing an empty ca n, botde or cigarette bull l ying along the water's edge. 13ut to d1e 21 ,000 volunteers participating in die 2002 Rivers Alive waterway cleanup program, trash clogging our state's streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands is exactly what they're concerned about. 
In its 11th year, Rivers ,\ Jive's goal is to raise awareness o f d1e need to keep Georgia's water supply clean and safe. Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Adopl-A- cream Program and Keep Georgia Beautiful Program, as well as "Help rhe Hooch'' and "River Awareness," volunteers and funding are provided by corporations and community organizations around the state. 
 
ln 2000, along rhe 332 miles of Georgia's waterways, volumeers removed 8,220 bags and 59 clump-truck loads of trash, equating to 182,532 pounds of garbage. lhi.s fall, more th, n 116 cleanup events are set. 
A group of 36 volunteers, sponsored by the Oconee County Clean and Beauliful Commission, met Aug. 17 to tackle the shoa Is of the Apalachee River-a known patty hangout for college sru lents. They removed four 30-gallon bags of aluminum ca ns, an old refrigerator and a rusted-out water heater, and nearly 
 
a ton of garbage along the river, ays John McNa lly, executive director of the commission. 
Despite what they found , McNally remains optimistic. "In the four years of cleanup, the beach has never been cleaner than when we arrived this Lime," he ays.

Sake alive! You should have seen what Sierra Club members and volunteers picked up from the Augusta Canal during the Georgia River Alive cleanup Saturday. 
Paper, bottles, cans. a box of clothes, fishing corks, bait cup . balls. vehicle tires - so much trash it took a Dumpster to hold it all when the canoeist , kayakers and walker arrived at the boat dock at Lake Olmstead. 
"We picked up a lot oftra h today. " said Cindy Annis, the outings leader for th Sierra Club. 
"It was surprising. We had lots of old tires. I think everybody had two bags in the canoe." 
About 65 people departed from the canal banks at Savannah Rapid Pavilion about 11 a.m. , after Augustan Sam Booher, the chairman of the Sierra Club in Georgia. and his wife. Laurie, signed them up to en ure they will receive their Rivers Alive T-shirts next month. 
 
SIERRA CLUB INFO 
The local Sierra Club spearheaded a volunteer cleanup of the Augusta Canal on Saturday as part of Rivers Alive , Georgia's statewide river cleanup program . 
The Augusta cleanup was the 1 first such event in the state this

Each year, local Sierra Club members clean the canal at least once. 
This year, they became the organizing group for the Department of Natural Re ources tatewide River Alive program. Mr. Booher said. 
"They've got 116 groups in Georgia that are going to be picking up garbage under the Rivers Alive program this year," he said. "Mo t arc going lo do it in October, which is the sensible time. 
"Some are going to do it in September but I thought I would jump off 
 
and be the first. " Mr. Booher invited the public to 
attend. and many re ponded. One of them. Chuck Elliott, even 
brought two extra kayaks for other people to use. 
"My attitude is Augusta is a fanta tic place. and people need to get out and experience the Augusta Canal and see what we have five minutes from downtown Augusta. " Mr. Elliott said. "And you can't do that sitting on your butt in Olmstead Park. 
"You need to get out and become a part of the olution vs. dropping a piece of trash and becoming part of the problem.'' 
Mr. Booher credits th Savannah Waterways Forum with getting the canal. which begins al the lock and dam in Columbia County and ends in Augusta, opened to the public in the early 1990 after it was closed for several years. 
"As a result of that. we're now able to do canal cleanups, he said.

Dublin-Laurens area residents will wade inlo the 
Oconee in October as part of the continuing tatewide campaign to cl an and preserve Georgia's 70,150 miles of rivers and slreams. 
The effort will be pa r t of Rivers Alive, the 11th Annual Georgia River Cleanup, which is expect.ed to once again be the largest single volunteer cf~ fort to beautify Georgia's water resources. 
Vol unteers in Dublin-Laurens will stage their cleanup ai 8:30 am Saturday at area boat landings in Lau1:ens County. They will be joining an estimated 20,000 other volunteers s tatewide participating in the Annual River Cleanup. During the month of October over 100 othe r cleanups will collect trash and other debris in streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands from the Coosa River in 
<trth Georgia to the Okefeno- 
 
kec Swamp in the outh. "We feel very fortunat.e io be 
a part of a community that takes so much pride in iLs recreational faci lities an d resou rces. The Oconee River has been and continues to be an ex celleni fis hery a nd source of recreation for many here in the m idstate," said Leve Brown of 
the Dublin-Laurens Counly Recreation Auih ority. 
In addition 1,o the Outdoors Section of the DLCRA, the cleanup will also be sponsored by Keep Dublin-Laurens Beautiful, BellSoulh 'l'elephone Pioneers a nd local Boy Scout Troops. 
During 200l's River Cleanup, more than 18,000 volunteers cleaned over 650 miles of waterways and removed 120,000 pounds of trash and garbage including refrigerators, cars, furniture and even a kid's bike from the state's waterways, according to Harold Harbert, coordinawr of Georgia's Adopl-AStream . edge into the woods. We had never ven[U red much into the wooded area of the sandbank because most of our trips there were for quick, cooling dips in the wate r. 
The amount of trash we found there just infuriated both of us ! The li nerbugs had taken t.ime to walk up the sandbar into the woods to dispose of the ir garbage under the willow trees and in the tall rive grnsses near the water 's edge. dents is planning its first-ever river clean-up Oct. 26. 
''The Alapal1a is really a gem,'' said Bret Wagenhorst, one of the organizers of the . Tifton Alapaha River Alliance. "You don't hear much about it in rrift Count~~ but it's ranked as one of South Georgia's most extreroely beautiful rivers by pa,clclling magazines. 
"rt has a lot of potential for ecotourism, and it's something that should be preserved. It's unique." 
The clean-up will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Satur-

Alapaha and think it's very beautiful, but getting junky in

walking along the river's 
shores but may use canoes as necessa11(

sored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Georgia AdoptA-Stream and Keep Georgia Beautiful, in cooperation with Help the Hootch and River Awareness. 
It targets clean-ur,s across all Georgi.a waterways, including streams, rivers. lakes and wetlands, and has the mission of cTeati.ng awareness of m1d involvement with the preservation of Georgia's waterways.

Help to clean up Georgia~ waterways 
 
Georgia has more than 70,100 miles of rivers and streams that need help to stay clean. "Rivers A live: Georgia's Eleventh Annual River Cleanup, stands poised to do just that - but they need your help. 
While the statewide cleanup is not scheduled to 
happen until October 2002, cleanup organizers and sponsors are needed now. 
The mission of "Rivers Alive is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources. This year's event is expected to be the state's largest single volunteer effort to beautify Georgia's water resources. 
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages sportsmen's clubs, civic groups, church groups, businesses and interested citizens to organize a cleanup in their area 
"The River Cleanup is one of the most important events in this state," said Harold Reheis, Director of DNR Environmental Protection Division. "Not only do we remove thousands of pounds of debris from the rivers, but we educate and inform the citizens of 
 
Georgia about the importance of maintaining our river systems." 
During the 2001 River Cleanup, more than 18,000 
volunteers participating in 100 local cleanups 
re- 
moved 120,000 pounds of trash and garbage from state waterways. The goal for this year is to have 
125 
local cleanups with more than 20,000 volunteers. 
The Rivers Alive board has made organizing a cleanup easier by including everything needed on their 
website -www.riversalive.org. Items that can be found 
include a registration form for event organizers, a river cleanup guide booklet, maps and detailed contact information so that volunteers can find your event and links to your cleanup information from the Rivers Alive website. In addition, there is a long list of cleanup organizers that can provide assistance.

At least one river's banks were live Aug. 17 as the Oconee County lean and Beautiful Commission orked for hours. The OC&BC cleaned up palachee Beach for part of the nnual Rivers Alive Clean-up Day. About 36 concerned citizens, from a.m. to 1:30 p.m ., waded through ash at the beach, ultimately haulg away nearly a ton of trash. OC&BC Executive Director John 
cNally said the group did an xcellent job and even had some Jnlikely help from three teen-age 
ys camping at the beach . Also here to help were someone from the .ocal Environmental Protection Division and the Department of atural Re ource . 
''We were real pleased ," McNally ;aid. "Not only at the turnout, but jt was nice having someone from the tate and local EPD and they orked , too! " 
The group of volunteers hauled way a lot of bottles and 60 pounds f aluminum can . Some of the big- 
 
ger items included a refrigerator and a rusted hot water heater. 
The OC&BC goes to the beach about every six months and every time, there's plenty of trash to pick up. 
"I keep hoping sometime we go down, there won't be anything to do," McNally said. 
However, during this visit the group discovered a trash can at the shoa ls area of the Apa lac hee. It was overflowing, but the fact that people seem to be trying to keep the trash contained is a good sign , he said. 
"I think we might be getting the word out," McNally said. "That's a po itiv<! step. " 
The beach area was still full of tra h, though. McNally said keeping the Apalachee Beach litter free is very important since its a water hed for the Apalachee River. 
Several residents who li ve near the beach area pitched in , too. 
"We did have a good citizen turno ut ," he said. "That was the best we' ve had ."

Yes! The event was a 1success for many reasons: Most obvious - we cleaned up some areas that really needed it. But we also heightened awareness of the individuals volunteering as well as (hopefully) the users of these areas. It is amazing to see what an impact so few people can have in such a short time while cleaning and that ,influence grows exponentially as the volunteers share their experiences with others .and encourage them to litter less at our

We offered the clean-ups as part of several classes' and this not only increased awareness on the part of the students, but also encouraged them to do similar programs with groups they will work I with in the future. Other clean-ups were offered , on campus as an opportunity to get involved or toi complete service hours. The effects it had on the community are noted in the number of trash bags we collected. The areas were so much cleaner when we left and we hope that this will encourage users of these areas to help them remain this way.

Everyone met at lower boat ramp in So. Fulton jNot this year but County (our organization initiated building of !usually we have this ramp). We bused them up to GA Power donations from Plant Atkinson where we had about l/2 hour of private education and video and what they should look ,companies. for. They boarded boats and floated down river where there was a fresh fish fry at the end of the trip. The fish were no from the Chattahoochee. A good time was had by all!
