To help lessen the impact in Georgia, this publication analyzing job losses has been prepared, with emphasis on skills and abilities that readily transfer from one career to another. The booklet lists the job preparation level as well as the knowledge bases, skill sets, and generalized work activities transferable to new jobs from the jobs most adversely affected by recent job cuts in this region. Each of the 11 jobs evaluated had at least 100 applications for unemployment insurance filed with the Georgia Department of Labor in January and February of 2008. It is hoped that using this publication will greatly shorten the time spent in transition from dislocated worker to finding alternative employment. As an aid to finding new employment, for each affected job, a table lists the ten occupations with the most expected job openings (at the same job preparation level) that use many of the same skills and abilities as the lost job. Expected job openings in these potential new jobs are split into those resulting from newly-created positions and those coming from job replacements. This is important because although job losses in this region have been severe, there will still be new job opportunities, due mainly to replacing workers who leave voluntarily. Wages from the 2007 edition of the Georgia Wage Survey are also shown for each potential new occupation. There are 53 new job possibilities highlighted in this report, each of which uses many of the same skills and abilities as a job lost by laid-off workers. For each of the 53 jobs, the last section of this booklet lists the top three (or four) industries in this region that employ the most workers in the particular occupation. Occupational codes (e.g. 47-2031 Carpenter) utilize the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system, upon which O*NET codes are based. Industry codes (e.g. 4841 General Freight Trucking) at the four digit industry group level are assigned using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). 3 41-2011 Cashiers Job Preparation Level: Short-term on-the-job Training of One to Four Weeks Relevant Skills and Abilities: Knowledge Customer & personal service Skills Social perceptiveness, service orientation Generalized Work Activities Working directly with the public Top Ten Occupations Requiring Short-term on-the-job Training that Use Many of the Same Skills & Abilities as Cashiers SOC Code Occupation New Job Annual Average Positions Replacements Openings Wage 39-9011 Child Care Workers 50 25-9041 Teacher Assistants 40 31-1012 Nursing Aides, Orderlies, & Attendants 40 43-9061 Office Clerks, General 20 43-4171 Receptionists & Information Clerks 20 31-1011 Home Health Aides 20 33-9032 Security Guards 10 35-3022 Counter Attendants, Cafe, Food Concession, & Coffee Shop 10 41-2021 Counter & Rental Clerks 10 43-3071 Tellers 0 50 100 6.69 40 80 14,631 30 70 8.07 50 70 9.57 30 50 10.40 10 30 7.11 20 30 10.13 20 30 7.23 20 30 8.53 30 30 10.41 47-2061 Construction Laborers Job Preparation Level: Moderate-term on-the-job Training of One Month to One Year Relevant Skills and Abilities: Knowledge Building & construction Skills Equipment maintenance, equipment selection Generalized Work Activities Handling & moving objects, performing general physical activities, controlling machines & processes Top Ten Occupations Requiring Moderate-term on-the-job Training that Use Many of the Same Skills & Abilities as Construction Laborers SOC Code Occupation New Job Annual Average Positions Replacements Openings Wage 49-9042 Maintenance & Repair Workers, General 30 33-3012 Correctional Officers & Jailers 10 47-2073 Operating Engineers & Other Const Equipment Operators 10 51-3023 Slaughterers & Meat Packers 10 51-9061 Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, & Weighers 0 45-2091 Agricultural Equipment Operators 0 45-4022 Logging Equipment Operators 0 47-2211 Sheet Metal Workers 0 51-7041 Sawing Machine Setters, Operators, & Tenders, Wood 0 51-9196 Paper Goods Machine Setters, Operators, & Tenders 0 30 60 14.01 20 30 12.66 20 30 12.40 10 20 NA 20 20 12.73 10 10 NA 10 10 14.35 10 10 11.65 10 10 10.73 10 10 11.44 4 51-9198 Helpers--Production Workers Job Preparation Level: Short-term on-the-job training of One to Four Weeks Relevant Skills and Abilities: Skills Equipment selection Generalized Work Activities Handling & moving objects, performing general physical activities, controlling machines & processes Top Ten Occupations Requiring Short-term on-the-job Training that Use Many of the Same Skills & Abilities as Helpers--Production Workers SOC Code Occupation New Job Annual Average Positions Replacements Openings Wage 35-3021 Comb Food Prep & Serving Workers, Incl Fast Food 70 120 190 6.72 43-5081 Stock Clerks & Order Fillers 10 90 100 9.52 37-3011 Landscaping & Groundskeeping Workers 20 30 50 9.30 53-3033 Truck Drivers, Light or Delivery Services 30 10 40 10.46 51-3022 Meat, Poultry, & Fish Cutters & Trimmers 10 10 20 NA 53-3031 Driver/Sales Workers 10 10 20 12.27 35-3041 Food Servers, Nonrestaurant 0 10 10 6.74 43-5052 Postal Service Mail Carriers 0 10 10 21.43 51-9111 Packaging & Filling Machine Operators & Tenders 0 10 10 10.19 53-7063 Machine Feeders & Offbearers 0 10 10 10.23 53-7051 Industrial Truck and Tractor Forklift Operators Job Preparation Level: Short-term on-the-job Training of One to Four Weeks Relevant Skills and Abilities: Knowledge - Transportation Skills Operation monitoring, equipment selection Generalized Work Activities Handling & moving objects;
