To help lessen the impact in Georgia, this publication analyzing job losses has been prepared, with emphasis on skills and abilities that readily transfer from one career to another. The booklet lists the job preparation level as well as the knowledge bases, skill sets, and generalized work activities transferable to new jobs from the ten jobs most adversely affected by recent job cuts in this region. Each job evaluated had at least 100 applications for unemployment insurance filed with the Georgia Department of Labor in January and February of 2008. It is hoped that using this publication will greatly shorten the time spent in transition from dislocated worker to finding alternative employment. As an aid to finding new employment, for each affected job, a table lists the ten occupations with the most expected job openings (at the same job preparation level) that use many of the same skills and abilities as the lost job. Expected job openings in these potential new jobs are split into those resulting from newly-created positions and those coming from job replacements. This is important because although job losses in this region have been severe, there will still be new job opportunities, due mainly to replacing workers who leave voluntarily. Wages from the 2007 edition of the Georgia Wage Survey are also shown for each potential new occupation. There are 35 new job possibilities highlighted in this report, each of which uses many of the same skills and abilities as a job lost by laid-off workers. For each of the 35 jobs, the last section of this booklet lists the top three (or four) industries in this region that employ the most workers in the particular occupation. Occupational codes (e.g. 47-2031 Carpenter) utilize the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system, upon which O*NET codes are based. Industry codes (e.g. 4841 General Freight Trucking) at the four digit industry group level are assigned using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). 3 47-2061 Construction Laborers Job Preparation Level: Moderate-term on-the-job Training of One Month to One Year Relevant Skills and Abilities: Knowledge Building & construction Skills Equipment maintenance, equipment selection Generalized Work Activities Handling & moving objects, performing general physical activities, controlling machines & processes Top Ten Occupations Requiring Moderate-term on-the-job Training that Use Many of the Same Skills & Abilities as Construction Laborers SOC Code Occupation New Job Annual Average Positions Replacements Openings Wage 49-9042 Maintenance & Repair Workers, General 0 47-2073 Operating Engineers & Other Const Equipment Operators 0 33-3012 Correctional Officers & Jailers 0 51-9061 Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, & Weighers 0 51-9023 Mixing & Blending Mach Setters, Operators, & Tenders 0 51-9196 Paper Goods Machine Setters, Operators, & Tenders 0 20 20 15.89 20 20 14.42 10 10 14.55 10 10 14.49 10 10 18.28 10 10 NA 51-9198 Helpers--Production Workers Job Preparation Level: Short-term on-the-job training of One to Four Weeks Relevant Skills and Abilities: Skills Equipment selection Generalized Work Activities Handling & moving objects, performing general physical activities, controlling machines & processes Top Ten Occupations Requiring Short-term on-the-job Training that Use Many of the Same Skills & Abilities as Helpers--Production Workers SOC Code Occupation New Job Annual Average Positions Replacements Openings Wage 35-3021 Comb Food Prep & Serving Workers, Incl Fast Food 10 43-5081 Stock Clerks & Order Fillers 0 37-3011 Landscaping & Groundskeeping Workers 10 53-3033 Truck Drivers, Light or Delivery Services 10 53-7061 Cleaners of Vehicles & Equipment 0 53-3031 Driver/Sales Workers 0 49-9098 Helpers--Installation, Maintenance, & Repair Workers 0 51-9111 Packaging & Filling Machine Operators & Tenders 0 53-7064 Packers & Packagers, Hand 0 43-5052 Postal Service Mail Carriers 0 100 110 7.02 60 60 10.13 20 30 9.63 10 20 10.24 10 10 8.36 10 10 11.32 10 10 8.74 10 10 12.25 10 10 8.93 10 10 21.38 4 53-7051 Industrial Truck and Tractor Forklift Operators Job Preparation Level: Short-term on-the-job Training of One to Four Weeks Relevant Skills and Abilities: Knowledge - Transportation Skills Operation monitoring, equipment selection Generalized Work Activities Handling & moving objects;
