By th e encl of that struggle , Georgia and most of the South had been ruin ed and we re fo rced into a long period of recovery that stre tched un til World War II. By th e middle 1950s, Georgia had begun to thri ve aga in , thi s tim e as a home for indu stry. Ma n y groups had been estab li shed to work toward ending segregation, and afte r th e C ivi l Ri gh ts movement ended the Ji m Crow era, Geo rg ia's c iti es, especially the capital city of Atlanta, began to grow rapidl y. "The C ity Too Busy to Hate" became the de fac to cap ital of the South. Today it remains the economic hub of the region and is headquarters for numerous internationa l companies. \.Vh ile Atlanta is known as a metropolis , man y of Georgia 's oth er citi es and towns reta in th eir clown-home character ye t still manage to share in today's econom ic growth. CLIMATE The climate of Georgia is mild , wi th a subtropical feel along the coast. In the summer, tem pe ratures tend to ri se into the 80s an d 90s during the day and fa ll to the low 70s a t night, except in the mountains , where it's usua lly a few degrees coole r. Sometimes the humidity along the coast makes it seem hotter, but that's also what helps account for that region 's lush fo liage, making the hea t more tolerable. Winter temperatures hover in the 40s and 50s during th e clay, dropping into the 30s at night, with occasional cold spells that dip below freezing. The mountains ca n usuall y count o n two or three clu stin gs of sn ow eac h season, but it ra rely sn ows below Atlanta. GEOG RAP HY As th e larges t state east of th e M iss iss ippi , Georgia e ncompasses several geographi cal regions. The rugged mountains of the northwest a re linked to th e Cumberland range , and those in the northeast are part of the Blu e Rid ge , the beginning of the Appa lach ians th at run up the East Coast all th e way to Ma ine. In th e Piedmont region, whe re these mo unta in s slowly give way to rolling hill s, the rivers flo w over fl at shoa ls an d through hardwood forests of oak, sycamore , and a host of other species. Warrenton stages the annual Sportmen's Festival in November, and in Wren s you can visit gourd farms and get the makings for eye-catching gourd birdhouses . Thomson is home to the Belle Meade Hunt, whi c h hosts fo x hunts and other events from November through March, and the sm all town of Harlem tips its hat to Oliver Hard y with th e Oliver Ha rd y Festival, an O ctober celebration of the home town boy wh o mad e good in th e Laurel and Hardy comedies.
