REPORT OF THE LITERARY DEPART 1E T.

DEAR Sm: At the opening of the school term, my first efforts were to familiarize myself with the ability of the pupils in order to a sign them to the proper classes. I found many of them graded too high and some too low so by regrading and als by combining classes, I arranged to have better gracled classes and was able to give only one class to each teacher. In the advanced classes there is some rotation and the teachers are given pecial subjects. 
In assigning teachers to classes, I endeavored to ascertain the grade work desired and also in the rotating classes the ubjects liked best deeming it wise to give the tea.chers work they were most interested in. This was done wherever po ible. 
Since September there have been many changes in the make up of classes finding it necessary f r the good of the pupil to promote one or put one in a lower class, promotion being preferred wherever possible. 
Special attention is being given to the speech of the oral classes to familiarize them with the element and combination charts, and also to the general improvement of the speech and voices. In some cases I can see marked improvement. 
The intermediate oral cl sses have been held back somewhat in order to teach speech and speech reading of the language given in the years gone by. This was absolutely neccessary if the pupils were to remain in the oral department. 
Quite a mumber of objects have been bought to be used in object and language teaching and are being used with good results.

One of the main features of the school work is to get the pupils interested in reading and for this purpose t.hirty or forty volumes of reader and story books have been purchased for supplementary reading and a period of twenty minutes ea h day during school hours, s t apart for this purpose. 
The school i now very well graded but it will require a year more to make it more perfect. 
The teacher entered into their work with exceptional enthusiasm and have been very earne t in thi work. They are ever willing to uphold their part of the tasks before them. 
Several hav~ volunteered to bring up backward pupils out of shoal hours, thuFl showing their interest in the work. 
With hearty thanks to the teachers of both departments for their co-operation and with grateful recognition of your kind help and advice, without which I could not have accomplished what I feel has been a go d beginning, I am,

Early in the year one boy in the olored Department died of a evere and protracted case of typhoid fever, other than thi. , there was very little ickne than a few case' of mump .

DEAR TR : The following eleven day were devoted to my work at the chool for the Deaf, during the year ending Dec. 31,1907: January 11, February 1, February 22, March 22, April 5, May 3, September 20, October 11, Tovember 1, Kovember 22, December 13. 
Examinations and te ts, complete as po sible, were made of the eye , ears, noses a.nd throats of fifteen new white pupil . 
Impacted wax was removed from the ears of seven pupils. Eleven pupils received treatment for acute eye disea e . five for acute throat or no e inflammation and six for acute ear trouble~. Fifty-five children received the micro copic test for the presence of hook worms. Of these, thirty-four were new case and twenty-one had been previou ly fouud to have the worms. The worm were found in twenty-nine instance, fourteen old and fifteen ne,,' ca t'. Round worms were found in one ca e. A large fibroid tumor was found in the na<:o-pharinx of one pupil, who wa taken home for treatment. Reven pupils had adenoid vegetation. removed; one had a faucial tonsil exci ed and one had part of inferior turbinate remm'ed, to open nostril. Twenty-nine pupils were refracted under atropine, for eye train and gla es were recommended for twenty-five of these. Several vi its were made to the olored Department.

OBJE 'r OF THE . HOOL. 
The primary object of the chool i to give. to the deaf 
"uch a knowl dge of the English language as ,,,ill enable 
them to u' it in pur. uing the usual avocation of life. The next mo t important obj ct i to give them ins ruction in Ilne or more branche of handicraft, as the great majority of them mu t of nece 'ity, on account of their affliction, rely on ornething of thi kind for earning a livelihood. Along with the. e, they are given in truction in Geography, Grammar, History, Natural Philo ophy, Arithmeti and Penman:hip, or in t>ther word., it i endeavored to giv thcm a pra tical common school education. 
Articulation and lip-reading are taught to those pupils, who aft l' a prolonged trial, are found to posse the r'qui. ite.ability to warrant its continuance.

Boy' are given in truction in Printing, Wood-working, Wooel-carving, Painting, ho -making, Blacksmithing and <1arclening.
