GEORGIA LIBRARY LIST for ELEMENTARY and HIGH SCHOOLS 1963-1964 Supplement Published by DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CLAUDE PURCELL State Superintendent of Schools -1- INTRODUCTION This list supplements the 1962-1963 printed Georgia Library List. All titles included in this list were approved by a Professional Library Committee. Special State lists are issued from time to time, and these lists are given a symbol to be used to indicate the source of the approval; such as, "GL-M' for Pathways To Music Biblio.}raphy. Information about these special lists is included in the Directions r-or Ordering Books, 1963-1964. In addition to the Georgia Library List, selections may be made from the Standard Catalog For High School Libraries, the Children's Catalog, the Basic Book Collection For High Schools, the Basic Book Collection For Junior High Schools and the Basic Book Collection For Elementary Schools. The State cannot furnish these lists, but they may be purchased ~d th state funds. Titles may also be selected from the Critical Review Sections of the Ala Booklist, the Horn Book, the Library Journal or School Library Journal, and the Bulletin of The Center For Children's Books. These publications appear on the Georgia Magazine List and may be purchased with state funds. Approval has been given to subscriptions to Junior Literary Guild and the Young Adult Service of the Guild, though care should be taken in evaluating these selections just as other possible choices would be evaluated. Publishers lists, catalo~ or advertisements (even in approved sources) are not acceptable selection sources. County histories may be purchased with state funds, but individual titles have not been listed. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to supply all order information, including the source from which the material can be purchased. BOOK SELECTION POLICIES The Professional Library Committee urges that all schools or school systems and public libraries establish written book g~!action policies. Copies of suggested policies may be obtained from the Division of Instruc~ tional Materials and Library Services, State Depar~nent of Education. CATALCG SERVICE Catalog cards will be furnished for all books purchased with school or public state library funds, if they are requested on current boo!: purchase orders. Requests for application blanks for card service ahould be made to the Director of Catalog Service, 92 Mitchell Street, S. W., Atlanta 3, Georgia. The application must be filled out, promptly signed and returned to the director before the service can begin. Only one approved application is necessary. l l does not have to be rene~d eac!l. year. ORDER DIRECTIONS New mimeographed Order Directions are prepared each year. Be sure to study the current Order Directions before placing an order with the State Department of Education. An effort has been made to give more information about the binding of -2- the titles. "Boards" means that the book is bomd in pasteboard covered with paper. Prebound, Lib. Bind. (Library Binding), School Ed., Goldencraft, Cadmus, Gibraltar Bind., Harpercrest, etc., indicate that the title has been put in a stronger binding than the regular trade edition. "Reinforced" means that the hinges of the book have been reinforced. The terminology used by the publisher has been given if it was indicated in the information that was requested. Be sure to include this information in ordering books, since publishers sometimes issue the same titles in ragular trade bindings. PROFESSIONAL BOOKS The Georgia Library List no longer contains a section of professional books. For information concerning books for teachers, consult the Selected List of Books For Teachers. This list is available on request from the Division of Instructional Materials and Library Services. MAGAZINES At\D AUDIO_VISUAL NATERIALS Magazines, filmstrips, recordings and other audio-visual materials circulated through the library can be purchased with state aid library funds. Information about their purchase is contained in the Order Directions. ADDITIONAL SERVICES The services of the Division of Instructional Materials and Library Services may be requested by anyone desiring help in the selection of materials or advice about the organization and administration of libraries. Requests for visits to school libraries should be made to IV'II'. H W. Clements, Director, or !Aiss Sarah Jones, Chief Library Consultant, Division of Instructional Materials and Library Services. -3- ENCYCLOPEDIAS Class No. Author - Title - Date - Publisher Price R030 American People's Encyclopedia. 20v. 1963.
