Lynette Jones, Effingham County Schools Springfield 31329 111 THE GEORGIA TEXTBOOK LIST 1982 This publication includes a complete list of textbooks adopted by the State Board of Education. This list has been prepared for the use of superintendents, principals and teachers and has been arranged alphabetically by publishers under the subject headings given in the Table of Contents. In order that the instructional material used as basic text in our schools be ofthe highest quality, the Board of Education, through the Georgia Department of Education, carries on a continuous review and study of all textbooks presented by publishers. The State Board of Education appoints a committee to serve in an advisory capacity. The Textbook Advisory Committee consists of 17 professional educators and six lay members; two members are appointed from each congressional district and three committee members represent the state at large. The Textbook Advisory Committee reviews all titles submitted and recommends to the State Board those titles found to be of high quality and desirable for use in the public schools of Georgia. Four options are open to the Board: (1) accept the recommendations as presented; (2) reject the recommendations of the committee; or (3 and 4) add to or delete from those recommendations. Titles accepted and approved by the State Board are considered "adopted" for purchase with state textbook funds. I. ADOPTION CYCLE Textbooks are adopted for a period of five years. Each year one or more subject(s) is considered for adoption. During the school year following the state adoption, each school system should make plans for adopting textbooks in that subject. The subject areas and dates of next adoption periods are as follows. 1. 1982-Mathematics, Business Education, Consumer Education, Industrial Arts and other vocational subjects 2. 1983-Fine Arts, Foreign Languages, Science, Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Driver and Safety Education 3. 1984-English, Spelling, Handwriting, Dictionaries, Literature and Humanities 4. 1985-Reading 5. 1986-Social Studies II. TEXTBOOK ALLOTMENTS Each year a specific amount of money is appropriated by the General Assembly for Instructional Materials and is allotted to each school system. lV III. HOW TO ORDER TEXTBOOKS A. Determine that sufficient state and local funds are available to cover the order. Postdate orders to July 1 if necessary for summer shipments. School systems must assume financial responsibility for all orders. B. Order only titles and editions contained in The Georgia Textbook List 1982. Refer to the Table of Contents to locate a subject area. C. Publishers submitting materials to be listed in The Georgia Textbook List 1982 agree to furnish each local system one free teacher's edition to be used by the teacher using classroom quantities of the pupil's edition. Teacher's editions so furnished become the property of the school system and should be inventoried in the same manner as the pupil's books. D. Free teacher's editions must be ordered on the order with the student texts. E. Use only the official State Textbook Order Blank. An adequate supply may be obtained from the Textbook Section of the Georgia Department of Education, see address in Item F. If the order blanks are reproduced, they must be exact copies of the order blanks supplied by the state. F. Orders should be typed in triplicate. Use separate order blanks for each publisher. Send original and two copies to Textbooks Georgia Department of Education State Office Building Atlanta, Georgia 30334 An approved copy will be returned to the local superintendent and a copy will be mailed to the publisher. Fill in all information. Give catalog or computer number, correct and complete title, copyright date, grade level, exchange price and extension. All orders must be signed by local system superintendent. G. Be certain shipping address is complete. Do not have a shipment made to a school which will be closed in the summer. Indicate a central shipping point which will be open during the summer months. A central shipping point will insure accurate deliveries of textbooks. H. Place orders early. Orders placed after July 1 may not be received before school opens in the fall. I. All orders must have approval of the Textbook Section. Confirmation orders are not approved. J. New books to be returned to publishers must be sent to the publisher at your expense. You should secure prior approval from publisher before returns are shipped. K.
