PURCELL STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS JANUARY, 1962 GEORGIA PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS 'CONTENTS AND ORDER OF FRESENTATION-This book- let contains a brief statistical description of each public high school. The information given in the first 11 columns for each high school pertains to grades 9 thru 12 with the exception of the 3 columns on teachers. It was necessary to give the high school teachers by grades 8 thru 12 since Superintendents' Annual Reports provided for this category of reporting. The information in the last four columns for each school pertains to all of the grades in that particular school. Descriptions of White High Schools follow the green summary page, high schools in county systems first, followed by high schools in 0 independent systems. Descriptions of Negro High Schools follow the pink summary page in the same manner in regard to high schools of county and independent systems. 3 CORRECTIONS- Hopeful High School and Sale City High School (white schools in Mitchell County) are listed in the bulletin as accredited u schools in 1961-62. These schools were ac- Z credited for 1961-62, but they are operating as elementary schools only. Also, the accreditation status "summary" of schools at the bottom of the last page of White- High Schools should read as follows: no. ac- credited by both Ga. and Southern Association- 213; no. accredited by Ga. Commission only-113 8 non-accredited; 6 others-5 are not operating in 1961-62, the other is not a regular high J school. < Three private schools that serve public high ZI school student? are listed in this presentation: Gordon Military College in Barnesville, Iz Georgia Military College in Baldwin County, and Toccoa Falls in Toccoa. PROJECTIONS OF HIGH SCHOOL-AGE POPULATION - Georgia's population of high school age increased 18.6? between 1950 and I960. This age group ia expected to increase 20.4? between i960 and 1965. The estimate for Georgia's high school-age population for 1970 is an increase of 24.4? over the I960 level. DIVISION OF ADMINISTRATION Oscar H. Joiner, Director Statistical Services January, 1962 INCREASED HOLDING POWER-The increased holding power of Georgia public schools is evidenced by the fact that the number of high school graduates increased 83? from 1950 to 1961, while the number of registered live births increased only 29? between 1933 and 1943, the years in which these graduates were bom. The children born in 1933 entered school in 1939 and, after completing an eleven-year :-,, graduated in 1950. The children born in 1943 entered school in 1949 and, after completing a twelve-year program, graduated in 1961. The I960 Census Survey of Georgia's population found 83.9? of the high school-age group (14-17 yrs. of age) enrolled in either public or private schools. 92.8? of the children 14 and 15 years of age and 75.1? of the 16 and 17-year group were enrolled in public or private school. By contrast, the 1950 Census Survey found a smaller number of this age-group enrolled. Only 73.4? of Georgia's high school-age population were in school at that time. 89.3? of the children 14 and 15 years of age and 57.5? of the 16 and 17-year group were enrolled in public or private school in 1950. EDUCATIONAL STATUS OF GEORGIA'S ADULTS-According to the U. S. Census 1960, 18.4? of Ga.'s adults (25 years of age and older) have completed four years of high school. This percentage in 1950 was 9.9? and 9.2? in 1940. The median-school-years-completed by Georgians in this age group was 9.0 years in 1960, 7.8 years in 1950, and 7.1 years in 1940. The estimated median-school-years-completed by persons 25 years and older in the nation in I960 was 10.8 years. In I960 the census revealed that 3.3? of Ga.'s adults had not completed any years of school; 4.3? had completed 1 to 4 years of school; 12.8?, 5 and 6 years of school; 9.8?, 7 years of school; 9.5?, 8 years of school; 8.3?, 1 to 3 years of high school; 18.4?, 4 years of high school; 7.3?, 1 to 3 years of college; and 6.2? had completed 4 years or more of college training. WHITE HIGH SCHOOLS SIZE OF WHITE HIGH SCHOOLS 1960-61 - The ijgjjian en- rollment (grades 9-12) was 313, i.e., one-halY of Georgia's 339 White high schools had a larger en- rollment and one-half had a smaller enrollment than 313 pupils. 32 of the 339 White high schools had 99 or less children in grades 9-12; 76 schools had 100-199; 51 schools had 200-299; 4-5 schools had 300-399; 32 schools had 400-499; and 103 schools had 500 and over. Savannah High School in Chatham County had the largest enrollment (2,341) in grades 9-12. Richmond Academy in Richmond County had the largest graduating class (674) in 1961. 40 White high schools had less than 100 children (grades 9-12) in average daily attendance during 1960-61. """ "f_ these are not operating as high schools in 1961-62. 10? White high schools had senior classes with 100 or more enrolled in 1960-61. The enrollment in White high schools has almost doubled since 1940. There has been a significant change in high school enrollment (9-12) as a per cent of the total enrollment. In 1940, high school students comprised only 16.1? of the student body. This percentage increased to 17.2? by 1950 and 22.4? in 1961. Population estimates of the U. S. Census Bureau point up the fact that high school-age groups and college-age groups will increase rapidly as a per cent of our sohool-age population in Georgia during the 1960's. ACCREDITED SCHOOLS - The table shown below gives the accreditation status (1961-62) of Georgia's 334 White high schools. The enrollment data shown here Is for the school year 196061. Five of the 339 high schools that operated in 1960-61 were consolidated with other- high schools and operate elementary grades only in 19-61-62. Hopeful and Sale City high schools in Mitchell County are listed on the following pages as being Georgia accredited high schools in the current year. These schools were accredited for 1961-62 but have since been consolidated and operate elementary grades only. The enrollment data on this chart excludes the 10,974 White high school students (grades 9-11) who were in 48 incomplete high schools in 1960-61 and the 453 students who were enrolled in the five high schools that were consolidated and are not operating in 1961-62. The State Board of Education established policies in keeping with this legislation. The State Department of Education developed criteria stating that all schools going to twelve years of education should spend at least four years in making the transition and should plan a program of education, grades 1-12, in terms of the needs of that particular school system. Approximately 60? of the systems planned their first 12th grade graduation at the end of the 1951-52 school year. The remaining 40? planned for a 12year program graduation at the end of the 1952-53 school year, with the exception of six systems whose plans were for the school years of 1953-54 or 195455. These six systems were Baldwin, Cobb, Columbia, Jackson, Lamar, and Murray counties. Nineteen school systems made this transition, either partially or totally, prior to 1952. This transition from 11 to 12 years of education caused the numbers of high school graduates to be greatly reduced In 1951 and 1952, the two years in which most of the eleventh graders were held over for twelve years of schooling. SYSTEMS with no senior class 5* -5rf TOTAL SYSTEMS 197 100? *4 of these systems had no enrollment, grades 9-12. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES - The increased holding power of Georgia's White schools is evidenced by the fact that the number of high school graduates increased 66? from 1950 to 1961, while the number of White registered live births increased" only 41? between 1933 and 1943, the years in which these graduates were bom. ^______ GEORGIA WHITE HI H SCHCC LS 1960-61 and School Name Address I.
