Prevention And Your Health Live Long and Live Well: Prevention Works! Prevention is the key to living long and living well. Eating healthy foods, exercising, and taking the time to get regular check-ups, immunizations and screenings can add years to your life! Why prevention? Prevention-oriented activities such as maintaining a healthy diet and active lifestyle, making regular visits to your health care provider, getting appropriate screenings and eliminating risk factors can reduce the likelihood of developing many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, certain cancers, and numerous other health conditions. What is a risk factor? A risk factor is anything in your life that increases your chances of getting a certain condition or disease. Risk factors can include family history, age and gender, ethnicity, environment, or already having a certain health condition. Make sure that you talk to your health care provider about your family history and your risk factors, so that you know which screenings are appropriate for you. What can I do? n Maintain a healthy diet that is low in fat, low in cholesterol and high in fiber n Maintain an active lifestyle. Get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day n Lose your stress! Meditation, yoga, massage and keeping a journal are terrific ways to release stress and relax your body, mind and spirit n Cut out as many risk factors as you can from your daily routine such as smoking, overeating, or exposure to hazardous environments n Get Screened!
