This is the fourth revision of our directory listing recycling markets in Georgia and surrounding states. Hopefully, this information will help the development and operation of recycling markets by establishing and improving communications among market components. It is critical to understand the following sections detailing the proper use of this c __.' publication before using the listings, so read on. The directory is intended as a reference tool for governments, businesses, and individuals as they develop recycling operations. Like many directories, the 1997 Recycling Markets Directory for Georgia only aids the first steps in planning or establishing a recycling program by indicating available markets in the region. Be cautious on two critical matters: First, thoroughly communicate with a listed company before carrying out any plan of action. Find out specifications under which they will deal with a material, the condition under which they will accept it, what is considered a contamination and at which specific levels, and how each of these factors affect the dollar value. There are no references to prices in this directory due to the everchanging nature of markets. Overall, weigh all aspects of what is required to recycle, including transportation. Although it is beyond the scope of this publication to cover program development, DCA can assist local governments and the Department of Natural Resources' Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P2AD) can assist businesses in Georgia in this regard. Second, remember that this directory is not comprehensive. While DCA's Recycling markets database is developing into a more complete and refined tool, 100% coverage is not guaranteed. Further analysis of trade publications, yellow pages, or other information sources may be necessary. Additions and Corrections Please help improve the recycling markets database by notifying us of corrections and additions at (404) 679-3161. Much of the information contained in this directory has a "shelf-life" of less than one year, so we need your help to keep pace with the unstable nature of these markets. Future Developments We plan to put this database on DCA's web site in the near future which would, for the most part, alleviate the need for large quantity printed distribution of the directory and allow for more timely, up-to-date information to be accessible by all interested persons. Disclaimer The Georgia Department of Community Affairs does not assume liability for the contents or services made available by the companies listed herein. Further, it is the responsibility of users to conduct their own evaluations as to the quality and reliability of the companies listed. Inclusion herein does not represent an endorsement by the State of Georgia or DCA. II Configuration of a Listing The listings are arranged alphabetically in order of state, county, and company name. Indexes by product category can be found at the end of the directory. Column 1 in the example below provides the company name, mailing address, phone and fax numbers, and usually a contact person. If the facility has a location address that is different from the mailing address, then the location address is featured below the fax number. The inquiry date is when the telephone interview occurred. Last, there is an indication as to whether the company can provide for pickup and ship by rail. Pickup is frequently negotiable depending upon the volume and value of the material in question. Do not consider this factor to be unchanging. Again, communication with the recycler is essential. Column 1 Column 2 XYZ Company POBox 110 Atlanta, GA 30303 Contact: Kathleen Smith 100 University Drive Atlanta, GA 30306 Materials: HDPE Phone: (404) 555-1000 Fax: (404) 555-1001 Inquiry Date: 2/5/97 Pickup: No Rail Access: No Hours of Operation: 8-5; M-F Comments: Use post-consumer HDPE pellets to manufacture bags. Column 3 Fulton County Type: End User Column 2 features materials handled. Refer to the definitions beginning on page IX if you need more information on material types. Column 3 registers the county in which the company is located, the type of recycler, and even more materials if the company handles a great variety. The type of recycler includes collectors, collector/processors, brokers and end users. Collectors are drop-off collection points or materials haulers. Collector/Processors are facilities that collect and manipulate materials in preparation for end use. Individuals will deal only with certain collectors or collector/processors and should note in the comment section if a collector does not deal with the public or only services established accounts. Brokers are intermediaries between buyers and sellers of recovered materials. They are usually looking for large quantities to handle. End Users utilize recovered material as feedstock in manufacturing their product. For the most part, government, business and industry can utilize all recycler types. Finally, other relevant details and comments are presented at the bottom of the listing. These comments often contain critical information. III SPECIAL SECTION FOR INDIVIDUALS Your local government recycling and solid waste coordinator should be knowledgeable about the nearest recycling collection points. The local Yellow Pages may include recycling centers under L the heading "recycling" or "scrap metals" or other materials. Keep America Beautiful (KAB) has 60 affiliates across Georgia which are supported by Georgia Clean and Beautiful, headquartered at DCA. Many of the KAB affiliates sponsor recycling programs. Contact Georgia Clean and Beautiful at (404) 679-4910 for the nearest location. Presented below are opportunities for individuals to bring certain materials to collection points at nearby merchants. Remember that these stores are more likely to support collection if you patronize them, too. Aluminum Cans Aside from certain grocery stores, schools and fire stations may participate in aluminum can collection. The proceeds may, for example, be donated to programs to aid bum victims or to pay for something special at a school. Apparel. Appliances, Toys, Books, Recreational Equipment, Furniture, Etc. The Salvation Army, Goodwill, the Kidney Foundation, the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs' Materials for the Arts Program (phone 404-853-3272), and other thrift operations will accept donations of these and other items if they are still of decent quality. Pickup can be arranged, and donations may be tax deductible. Check the yellow pages for the nearest store. Otherwise, see if a local church, school, charity, swap operation, or acquaintance can make use of the surplus item. Another option for apparel is textile recyclers. There are a few listed in the directory that collect materials and either export them to third world countries or sell them as rags. Automobiles Individuals (and corporations, too) can donate unwanted vehicles to the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia (NKFG). As soon as the paperwork is complete, NKFG coordinates a convenient time to pick up the vehicle, free of charge. The vehicle is sold at an auto auction and NKFG uses the funds to fight kidney disease. The donor receives a deed of gift and a thank you letter. Donors may qualify for a tax deduction. For more information about KIDNEY CARS, call (404) 248-1315, ext. 18, or outside metro Atlanta, call 1-800-633-2339. Batteries - Household There are no household battery recycling processors in the state. However, there are companies outside of Georgia that can recycle these batteries. They are listed in the directory. (NOTE: You will probably have to pay the shipping costs to mail your batteries to the company and you may possibly be charged a processing fee.) Rechargeable batteries can be recycled at many local retailers. For more information call the Portable Rechargeable Battery Association at (404) 412-8826 or 800-8-BATTERY. Batteries - Lead-Acid
