The Multiplier Effect
Pensions generate spending and the economic impact of retired educators throughout Georgia is significant. Each $1 in state and local pension benefits paid to Georgia residents ultimately supports $1.43* in total output in the state. This "multiplier" incorporates the direct, indirect, and induced impacts of retiree spending, as it ripples through the state economy.

Economic Impact of Retired Educators
In fiscal year 2017, TRS paid $4.5 billion to its retirees. TRS pension benefits helped create more than 54,000 jobs in Georgia. These pension benefits supported approximately $6.65 billion in total economic output.

At 79.3%, the TRS funding ratio is ranked in the Top 1/3rd of all pension
systems in the U.S.
