GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the United States. Wardens and Superintendents are in charge of leading a team of officers in the supervision of nearly 52,000 state prisoners within 34 state prisons, 21 county prisons, and four private prisons. WARDENS 34 State Prison Wardens, 4 Private Prison Wardens and 21 County Prison Wardens (house state inmates) Appointing authority and highest ranking official inside all state, county and private prisons THREE REGIONS STATEWIDE THREE REGIONS STATEWIDE North Region: 11 State Prisons, 1 Private Prison, 1 Probation Detention Center (PDC), and 1 Integrated Treatment Facility (ITF) Southeast Region: 9 State Prisons, 3 Private Prisons, 3 PDCs, 1 ITC and 2 Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities (RSAT) Southwest Region: 9 Prisons, 2 Private Prisons, 2 PDCs, and 1 ITC Female Services: 5 State Prisons, 2 PDCs, and 1 ITF RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for day-to-day operations and management of the prison Responsible for security, care and treatment and administrative functions, which include security, counseling (general population), mental health, chaplaincy, education, personnel, property control, vehicle management, food service, maintenance, accounting and vocational programs Supervise Deputy Warden of Security, Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment and Deputy Warden of Administration Ensure all aspects of the facility are in compliance with all standard and local operating procedures in preparation for annual basic or comprehensive audits by Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) audit team Provide supervision to Superintendents at six RSATs, 13 Transitional Centers (TC), two ITFs, and nine PDCs Provide direction and supervision to all institutional staff and all personnel and administrative functions Monitor custody and security of facility and inmates Oversee institutional disciplinary process Provide direction for the mental health unit Ensure periodic review of all emergency plans and security procedures Conduct frequent staff meetings to disseminate perti- nent information and receive feedback from staff Provide prompt response to complaints from inmate family/friends SUPERINTENDENTS 1 Statewide TC Coordinator and 13 TC Superintendents 9 PDC Superintendents 2 ITF Superintendents 2 RSAT Superintendents 1 Probation RSAT RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for all aspects of the individual day-today office operations and administrative duties Supervise administration, security and care and treatment staff. Ensure all staff are operating in accordance with stan dard and local operating procedures Responsible for maintaining facility standards Monitor and guide staff in problem solving Direct and personally monitor facility security func- tions and activities to maintain the custody and security of offenders Identify training needs and provide guidance to cor- rectional staff Interview, hire, direct, train, evaluate performance, discipline and discharge corrections employees Manage the operations and activities of correctional facilities and detention centers
