Our natural environment--from the mountains to the seashore--enables residents and visitors to enjoy a wide variety of quality outdoor recraation programs and facilities. We have made significant progress in recent years with Preservation 2000 toward protecting many of our irreplaceable natural resources while providing for publlc access and programs. But there IS still much to be accomplished. SCORP identifies relevant issues and policies for guiding the acquisition and protection of Georgia's valuable open space and recreation resources and for developing quality facilities and programs. It also outlines a strong action agenda and an implementation strategy which we enthusiastically endorse. Achieving the plan objectives will take all of us working together--state and federal agencies, local governments, the private sector, recreation and conservation groups, and individual citizens. The plan was prepared by the Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division of the Department of Natural Resources. A task force of nineteen diverse individuals from around the state committed a tremendous amount of time and valuable expertise to this planning effort. Twelve public forums held at various locations around the state provided general public input into the plan. SCORP serves as the planning document to guide the disbursement of Land and Water Conservation Fund money for outdoor recreation and the policy document for the state's Recreation Assistance Fund. The Georgia SCORP has the endorsement of my office. I personally urge each of you to answer the challenges set forth in this plan as we strive together to improve the quality of life in Georgia. Sincerely, C e l l Miller '95 SCORP - Stntcwide Comprchcnsivc Ourdoor Rccrcntion Plan
