Swanson and Andrea Gernazian Introduction This report describes the petroleum test wells and selected other deep wells drilled in Georgia from 1903 to 1979. Earlier versions of this report are "Oil Tests in Georgia" (1965, Information Circular 19) and "Petroleum Exploration in Georgia" (W.E. Marsalis, 1970, Information Circular 38), both of which were published by the Department of Mines, Mining and Geology-the predecessor of the Georgia Geologic Survey. Selected other publications that relate to petroleum exploration in Georgia are listed in the Bibliography. Thirty-six wells appear in this edition that were not in the 1970 publication. However, not all of these wells were drilled after 1970. Six of them were constructed to datermine the feasibility of underground gas storage in the mid-60's; therefore, they were not regulated by the 1945 Oil and Gas Act. Several wells that previously were listed as oil test wells are not used in this report. Either these Wells were never drilled or they are shallow water wells of limited significance. Furthermore, numerous corrections and additions have been made to previously reported data. Readers are encouraged to notify the Georgia Geologic Survey of corrections needed in this report. One hundred sixty-three wells have been drilled in Georgia since 1903; however, many of them were drilled in geologically unfavorable areas, to very shallow depths, or by inexperienced operators. For example, only 103 wells have been drilled to depths in excess of 2500 ft. Most wells have been drilled in the Coastal Plain Province; four wells have been drilled in the Piedmont Province. Many experts believe that much more exploration is needed to establish the presence of commercial quantities of oil or gas in Georgia. Description Of Contents The legal description of land in Georgia has resulted in much confusion about the location of some wells. In order to clarify these locations, the latitude and longitude of each well is listed in this publication. Accurate latitude and longitude are not available for every well because it is impossible to translate Land Lot- Land District descriptions to modern topographic maps in every case, and because few old wells have been located in the field. Plate 1 shows the locations of all wells cited in this report. Locations are reported with three accuracy notations. Least accurate are those reported as "Approx.". Such locations may have errors in the range of 1 minute. In general, locations followed by 1 or 5 are accurate to within one to five seconds as determined from a U.S. Geological Survey 7Vz-minute topographic map. The legal description used in this report includes references to Land Lot (L.L.), Land District (l.D.) or Georgia Military District (G.M.D.). Maps showing well locations more accurately than depicted on plate 1 are available for inspection at the Survey office. The GGS number assigned to most wells refers to the inventory number for cuttings or cores from that well. These cuttings or cores are available for examination at the Survey's main office in Atlanta. In general, they cannot be subjected to destructive analyses. D.P. No. refers to the drill permit number assigned to the well by the Survey. This is a sequential numbering system dating from 1945 when Georgia began to regulate exploration wells. Wells older than 1945 do not have a drill permit number, nor do some wells that were classified as non- petroleum exploration wells prior to 1975 (i.e., gas storage wells or deep water wells). Many wells have two reported evaluations. The following abbreviations are used: G.L., ground level; D.F., drill floor; K.B., kelly bushing; R.T., rotary table. Elevations are listed as reported by the operator with the exception of wells for which only a ground-level elevation is available. Some ground-level elevations were obtained from U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps. An elevation that is followed by an asterisk (*) is the one used by the operator as the depth datum for samples, logs and total depth. An elevation without an asterisk indicates that the depth datum selected by the operator could not be determined.
