Through it, the Department of Natural Re ources hope to create a better under tanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the natural environment. The 537-acre park is approximately 18 mile outhea t of Atlanta on Ga. 155. The mountain , a granite monadnock con i ting of 100 acre , is considered by many the mo t important peak of its kind in the Piedmont plateau. It ha been described as "a million-year-old mountain in the proces of evolution, unhindered by anyone." Here one comes to li ten , to watch , to mell , to ta te, and piritually to touch a mall tract of wildernes . In addition to the mountain and it outcrop there are other natural habitats to explore. Open field s once u ed as pasture and farm land are neighbored by fore t of pine and' hardwood , and a three-acre pond fed by mountain tream nestles clo e to the mountain ba e. Each of these habitats teems with life. The flora and fauna here maintain a delicate balance , one ea ily disrupted . At pre ent , the fir t of a network of elf-guided nature trails i completed. Thi Succe sion Trail i a three-quarter mile loop that meanders through the pine and hardwood forest to one of Panola' largest outcrop and then return to its point of origin. Due to the delicate ecological balance of Panola Mountain and the surrounding area, and its u ceptibility to human impact, certain rules have been establi hed. The public i a ked not only to follow the e rule but al o to help in their enforcement. Plea e help to protect it for the generation yet unborn, becau e it belongs to them as much a it belongs to us. A chedule of nature walk to limited acce a reas of the park will be po ted at the information board a nd in the interpretive center. The e walk will be guided by a n interpretive naturali t. For tho e who enjoy picnicking, table and tone grill have been placed around the day u e area. Par~ Regulati~J?S Camping i not permitted at thi park. Defacing, vandalizing, collecting or in any other way disturbing the natural or man-made tructures, minerals or rocks , plant or animals is strictly prohibited. Due to the delicate nature of the plant living on the rock outcrop and fore t floor , visitors mu t remain on designated trail . lndi criminate wandering by visitor would destroy the vegetation . Eating and drinking are permitted only in the picnic area. Open fire are permitted only tn the stone grill . Intoxicating liquors or drug are not permitted on park property. Litter can have been placed trategically about the park; please hold litter until you reach one of them. Photographer are asked to bee pecially careful about fla h bulbs , cubes , and film boxe . Pet are not permitted on the trail , even on lea h. Pet are allowed in the picnic area , on lea h. Firearms , fireworks , sting hots , or any other weapon or device capable of injuring or killing a per on or wildlife or damaging or de troying any public or per onal property are prohibited on park property. Swimming and fi shing are not allowed at thi park. Wheeled vehicle , motor-driven or otherwi e are re tricted to the a phalt urfaced road and parking area .
