Finding-List of Books and Pamphlets , Relating to Georgia and Georgians Compiled by El1a May Thornton, State Librarian. Atlanta 1928 Finding-List of Books and Pamphlets Relating to Georgia and Georgians Ena May Thornton, State Librarian. Atlanta 1928 FOREWORD. It is proper to say at the outset that this list is not a bibliography as that fact would immediately be evident. The complier is too much alive to its limitations to so classify it, thus making it liable to serious criticism. It has grown from the effort in the State Library to. build up its collection of Georgiana and it has been determined to put it in printed form in the belief that it has some importance as a contribution toward a bibliography. At the same time it has practical value as a check-list or finding-list, primarily for the Georgia State Library but secondarily for all libraries, individuals or dealers concerning themselves with Americana. With books and pamphlets belonging to the Georgia State Library, as indicated, for a basis, additions have been made, of titles in the University Library, the Carnegie Library of Atlanta, from the _Library of Congress cards, from Books relating to Georgia History in the DeRenne Library and from a list of books copyrighted in Georgia in early days. General bibliographies such as Sabin, Evans Roorbach and Kelly and others have been examined under catch'word headings and by quick search methods, not by an every entry checking which would have been an impossible undertaking in the present instance. The study of many old and out of print Georgia works, biographical and historical, yielded results of value and the source of each bit of information, as well as other details, not printed, is carefully noted on the cards permanently filed here, from which this press copy was made The compilation includes books and pamphlets written, by Georgians, about Georgia or printed in Georgia excepting purely routine documentary matter. As to who are Georgians, the construction is very liberal. The caref].l1 1>ibliographer of the future can eliminate according to his good judgement. For example, Maurice Thompson is included. He was. born in Indiana in 1844, removing soon thereafter with his parents to Calhoun, Georgia where he lived till 1868. He served as a Confederate soldier from this State so that this, coupled with twenty years residence, makes it seem that Georgia contributed largely to his development. No effort haS been made to analyze collected works, periodical literature or miscellaneous narratives having chapters on Georgia. Such entries, however, undoubtedly have important place in a complete bibliography. It is my conviction that all books and pamphlets dealing with colonial history as a whole might be properly incorporated and in some instances such entries have been made. It is hoped that, in the form submitted, librarians will be interested in checking against their collections with a view to bringing out new titles and various editions which has not been attemped to any extent, together with biographicalinformation about the writers including, of course, birth and death dates and places. I suggest that others in a position to do so follow the lead of a professor of bibliography in one of the foremost library schools in America in another State -who offers to give her stUdents-particularly Georgians- assignments that will bring this list into most practical service and doubtless be the means of enlarging it or of analyzing some class of its entries.in such fa.shion as~ to be a real contribution to Georgia Bibliography. Our oWn University people can do much in this direction. .:; <;' _. S In other words, the intention is that a kind of cooperative movement toward a bibliography of Georgia shall be set going by this effort and furthermore that, by giving it wide circulation, Georgians generally will come to take an interest and pride in the collection which is the only one that belongs to the whole people and will bestir themselves to see that it shall be the most nearly complete "of its kind anywhere. It is easily to be seen that uniformity has not been inviolate and that the stri"ctest technical forms have been sometimes sacri-ficed in the pressure due to limited funds and time for concentrating uninterruptedly upon the preparatIon and proof-reading for such a publication. However, it is believed that, in the essentials, it is dependable and accurate and it is the purpose to issue sheets of additions and corrections at rather frequent intervals in cumulated form. AcknOWledgement is made of the exc~llent services of Miss Marion Koonce of Atlanta in assisting the compiler in assembling" this information. She brought to the task vital interest and thorough concentration of effort. The preparation of the press copy was in the hands of Mrs. Mary S. Walker who worked with diligence and care. Sincere thanks are offered to all those who gave encouragement and assistance in any way, inclUding my associates in the State Library. To Mrs. P . .T. Allen of St. Elmo, Tenn., I am particularly indebted and to Mr. Duncan Burnet, Librarian of the University of Georgia. The publication, as it stands, is submitted with the earnest hope that its usefulness will justify the labor involved. Ella May Thornton.
