AT\..WU<, G EOR3IA 30303-1751 D AVID PoYTHRESS ""'"""""'" Dear Studen ts: Until recently many of us have defined educational success in rather narrow terms.Specifically, we have long held to the theory that a four-year college degree was the litmus test of academic success and thus "the only ticker to eco nomic security. But it is time for a change in our thinking. Only 1215 percent of students who enter gram mar school will event ually as earn a baccalaureate degree. But what abou t the other percent, who must also earn a living? I believe part of the answer is in vocational-lechnical school training and apprenticeship prog rams . Georgia is fortunate in either case . We have an excellent statewide system of vocational-technical schools. And there are several successful apprenticeship programs in Georgia, some sponsored by high school systems and other by labor unions. Apprenticeship programs allow a young person to get valuable on-the-job training from lighly skilled tradesmen, while earning class room credit and a good salary. Anothe r benefi t to apprenticeship programs is that the apprentice has the opportu nity to learn good work ethics and how to get along in the workplace, knowledge that is essential to any successful ca reer. I strongly encourage you ng people who don't plan to attend college to con sider an apprenticeship program as an excellent means of getting the training and work skills tha t will help ensu re a successful ca reer. Many occupations are currently covered in registered apprenticeship programs throughout the United States. Apprenticeship training is a common way to prepare for some occupations , such as plumbers and electricians. For occupations such as carpenters, bakers, and machinists, apprenticeship is one of several ways to become qualified. On-the-job training is less formal in structure. Apprenticeship programs are sponsored by employers and emp loyees of a specific trade (including labor unions). The sponsor plans and administers the program. The worker (apprentice) signs a written employment agreement and becomes a paid, full -time employee of the sponsor. In Georgia, both union and nonunion apprenticeship programs are available. There are two components to apprenticeship: on-the-job training and classroom instruction or related training. Classroom instruction provides the theoretical knowledge the apprentice uses in the work place. Under the guidance of a [ourheyperson. apprentices gain skills and experience while on the job. The amount of time it takes to finish an apprenticeship varies by program. Lengths of most programs range from two to five years. Wages for on-the-job training vary by program and by the amount of time the app rentice has been in the program. An apprentice's starting wage varies from 45 to 75 percent of the journey-level wage, with the average being about 50 percent. Wages are never less than the state or fede ral minimum wage . Wages increase periodically until they equal the journeyworker rate at the end of the apprenticeship. Upo n completion of the training, the apprentice is qualified as a skilled craftsperson (ioumeyperson) . In some programs, apprentices receive a certificate of completion issued by the U.S. Department of Labor. Although many occupations are represented in apprenticeship programs, not all programs are available in all areas of the state . Most apprennceable trades have a committee that selects applicants who meet minimum requirements. The requirements vary by program, trade, and local committee, but most include a minimum age (usually 18) and a high school diploma or equivalent. Some programs also require specific course work, a minimum grade point average, and the physical ability to do the work in a particular trade. Applicants may have to take an aptitude test. Competition for apprenticeship openings in some trades and locations is keen . Committees may give applicants points based on work experience, know ledge of the trade, and grades in trade-related courses. Applicants with the highest number of points are selected for the program . Those selected often have more trade-related experience and education and higher grades than are required in the standards. 1 BRICKLAYERS Apprenticeship Program for Brickmasons: THREE-YEAR PROGRAM (1,800 hou rs per yea r of on-the-job training & 144 hou rs of class room in st ruct io n ) APPLICANT REOUIRE MENTS 17-28 yea rs of age high school diplo ma or equ iva lent (Related expe rience may satisfy above requirements) CONTACT Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen 1323 Stewart Avenue SW Atlanta.
