Continue to place your baby in an approved car seat until he outgrows the seat, usually at 40 pounds, after which you should use a booster seat. HEALTH TIPS Continue with baby shots and well baby care, as needed. FEEDING TIPS Breastfeeding is recommended for at least the first year of life. If formula feeding, iron fortified formula should be given by cup - only 16 to 24 ounces per day (two to three cups). Whole cow's milk may be given at 12 months of age. He should be eating a variety of foods. He will be eating more table food and drinking less formula. Don't worry if his appetite changes from meal to meal, or he seems to lose interest in foods; he will eat when hungry. Your baby can wiggle, and lift her head a little. Your baby jumps al a sudden noise or sudden movement, and she throws her arms out and sometimes cries. Your baby's head will turn to anything that touches her cheek and open her mouth in search of food. Support her head when picking her up. Hold her safely near your body. BABY'S COORDINATION AND EYE DEVELOPMENT Your baby's eyes will watch your face and follow you around. Your baby will start at a sudden noise, stare at bright colors or light. Your baby's hand is held in a tight fist. BABY'S HEARING AND SPEECH Your baby can hear from birth. She will jump at loud noises such as a door slam and stop when familiar sounds are heard. BABY'S SOCIAL SKILLS Your baby will: Look at you when you talk. Enjoy your singing or humming. Smell you when you're near, and may begin to smile. Sleep about 20 hours a day, but not on any schedule. SAFETY TIPS Do not use baby powder. It can be irritating to your baby's skin and lungs. During bath time bathe and dry your baby with a cloth. Always check the water temperature. Never leave baby unattended on bed, couch or in a bath. Install a smoke detector in or near your baby's room. Always put your baby in an approved car seat in the backseat of your vehicle and make sure to get training in proper installation. Protect your baby from second hand tobacco smoke. Place your baby on his back on firm bedding for sleeping. HEALTH TIPS Make an appointment for baby's first baby shots and well baby visit to the doctor or health care provider. Check with your pediatrician or health department for a current immunization schedule. New babies may have bowel movements each day (some may be very dark the first few days, then pale yellow.) Skin rashes (on face or bottom) may be common. Do not apply vaseline or all before asking your doctor or nurse. FEEDING TIPS Breastfeeding: start soon after delivery. Hold baby with her body and face turned toward you. Your baby's mouth should cover as much of the nipple and dar!< part of the breast as possible. Nurse often-every two to three hours. The more you nurse, the more milk you will have. Formula Feeding: Use iron-fortified infant formula. Follow directions for mixing. Give your baby two to three ounces every two to three hours. Follow a moving light as well as follow you around. Begin to develop tears. SAFETY TIPS When your baby is sleeping: Be sure you have a firm mattress that fits the crib without gaps at sides or ends. Raise crib rails to keep him from falling. Crib slats need to be close together, to keep baby's head from getting through. Never leave your baby unattended on your bed or sofa. HEALTH TIPS Your baby may easily catch a cold or other diseases, if around crowds of people. Wait until he is older. Make appointment for first shots and well baby check-up. If you use a pacifier, use a one piece pacifier with a loop-handle. BABY'S HEARING AND SPEECH Your baby can hear very well. He startles when he hears sudden sounds and he quiets when he hears your voice or another familiar voice. BABY'S SOCIAL SKILLS Hold your baby often. Pick him up when he cries. Your baby may sleep about 20 hours each day. Talk and sing to your baby. FEEDING TIPS Your baby will: Fuss when he is hungry and pull away from breast or bottle when he is fulL Need only breastmilk or formula. "Growth Spurt Alert": appetite increases ~round 6 weeks.
