jimmy Smits Invites Viewers to America's Biggest Birthday Party, With Performances by Huey Lewis and the News, Taylor Hicks, jerry Lee Lewis, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Hayley Westenra, Harolyn Blackwell and the National Symphony 
Orchestra Conducted by Erich Kunze!. 
 
Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winn ing film , theater and television actor Jimmy Smits hosts the 28th annual broadcast of America's biggest and best-loved birthday party, A CAPITOL FOURTH, live from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. The star-spangled party will feature unrivaled musical performances from some of the country's best known and award-winning artists, as well as the most spectacular fireworks display anywhere in the nation.Grammy winners Huey Lewis and the News, "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks, rock 'n' roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis, Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell, classical superstar Hayley Westenra and soprano Harolyn Blackwell will perform a selection of patriotic and celebratory music with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Erich Kunze!. 
 
Following this musical salute, the Washington, DC, skyline will come alive with the most colorful, creative and booming display of fireworks ever set against si lhouettes of the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monum ent and the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The spectacular concert and show bring PBS viewers an unrivaled evening of patriotic and uplifting music followed by a stunning display of fireworks over the Washington Monument. The multi-award winning annual event will be broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Friday, July 4, at 8 PM with an encore presentation immediately following at 9:30 PM. GPB Radio will broadcast the program live at 8 PM as well. Capping off the show will be a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture:' complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery, an audience favorite and now A CAPITOL FOURTH tradition.

GPB Goes Digital! 
 
GPB Statewide Transmitter Upgrade Is Now Complete. 
 
It's true. [f you haven't heard, television across the country is changing to a new, digital format called DTV (digital television )! And Georgia Public Broadcasting has just completed another step in its digital transition to offer DTV throughout the state of Georgia - all to offer you more quality programming with improved picture quality and sound! Our broadcast engineers have been working tirelessly for the past year to construct new digital transmitter towers at our network locations in Atlanta (8.1),Augusta (20.1),Albany (14.1 ),Chatsworth (18.l),Columbus (28.1), Dawson (25.l),Macon (29. 1),Savan nah (9.1) and Waycross (8.1). Our transmitter work is now complete. Tune in now over-the-air for GPB digital and high definition programming when available.GPB digital is available in the Atlanta area on Comcast channel 808. To find out if GPB is available on cable in your area, contact your local cable provider. 
 
1. Purchase a converter box for each over-the-air television in your home. Government-issued coupons to offset the cost of the boxes are still available; calll -888-DTV-2009 or visit www.dtv2009.gov for more information and to apply for a coupon (up to two per household). 2. Purchase a new television set with a built-in tuner; or 3. Subscribe to cable or satellite. 
TVs with built-in digital-tuners can already receive DTV signals. How can you tell if your TV has a digital tuner? Check the instruction manual that came with your TV or look for a label that says "integrated digital tuner;"'digital receiver;"'digital tuner;"'DTV:"'ATSC:' or "HDTV.' lf your TV is labeled "digital monitor;' "HDTV monitor;"'digital ready" or "HDTV ready" it may need a separate converter box. Check the manual or visit the manufacturer's web site to Jearn more. 
 
In February 2009, GPB will broadcast 0 LY in digital,so now is a great time to make sure you are DTV Ready and that you can receive GPB! lf you receive your TV through an antenna or "rabbit ears" and you currently do not subscribe to cable or satellite, the TVs in your home will be affected by this transition. You need to take action to receive GPB's new digital signals and there are three options: 
 
Also, in order to receive DTV over-the-air, you may need to look at getting an antenna or evaluate your existing antenna. If you r indoor or outdoor antenna is old or not providing reliable DTV reception,or you want to find out what anten na is right for you, check online at www.antennaweb.org. You can also call a local TV antenna installer to check your system and find out what you need.

GPB Radio Programs Win Prestigious 2007 Peabody Awards 
 
Congratulations to Speaking of Faith and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! Both shows won 2007 Peabody Awards. First presented in 1941, the George Foster Peabody Awards recognize distinguished achievement and meritorious service by broadcasters, cable and webcasters, producing organizations, and individuals. The awards program is administered by the Grady College of journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. Selection is made each spring by the Peabody Board, a 16-member panel of distinguished academics, television critics, industry practitioners and experts in culture and the arts. It is among the most prestigious prizes in media. 
Speaking of Faith is produced by American Public Media and airs on GPB Radio across the

state at 10 AM on Sunday mornings. Host Krista Tippett and her staff were awarded a Peabody Award for a story called "The Ecstatic Faith of Rumi;' wh ich delved into the "adventurous, cosmopolitan" Islam of a 13th Century Persian poet who is enjoying a worldwide revival. The Peabody jury cited Speaking of Faith for continually illuminating connections among people of all faiths . 
 
NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! airs on GPB Radio on Saturdays at 11 AM right after Car Talk. While they proudly bill themselves as 'N PR without the dignity; Peter Saga! and Carl Kasell's weekly, whip-smart current events quiz show has carved out a niche in both public radio and popular cu lture. Behind The Scenes At GPB: Tom Barclay 
 
GPB Radio Operations Manager Tom Barclay is a key part of everything we broadcast across the state every day. He came to GPB from our namesake station in Rome, Georgia, WGPB. He worked for many years there, and is a very fami liar radio companion in Northwest Georgia. You know his voice from various transitions on the air. He's the voice of the GPB Member Card updates, for example. You'll also hear him throughout our on-air membership drives, exhorting you to keep doing your part fo r us. We decided to go behind the scenes with Tom this month, so that you can better know the GPB Radio Team you support with your membership. 
Preview: People hear your voice regularly. What do you do behind the scenes at GPB? 
 
Tom Barclay 
TB: My responsibilities "behind the scenes" involve everything required to keep our programs on the air and making sure correct programs run. I'm responsible for promotional messages, scheduling of underwriters, FCC paperwork, and serve as a liaison between radio personnel and our engineering staff. I also supervise our control room operators and handle the technical end of remote interviews that are conducted regularly at our studios for national and other programs. 
 
Preview: As a commercial radio refugee, what have you learned to like the most about public radio? 
TB: As somewhat of a news junkie, I love the fact that public radio has the time to explore issues in depth. I learn more listening to our news programs than I ever did in commercial radio. I also enjoy the interview programs like Fresh Air and I'm a huge fan of Car Talk and Wait, Wait. .. Don't Tell Me! Most importantly, I never fail to be impressed by the talents of the people working in public radio. We have some of the best reporters and staff and all have a passion for what they do. 
Preview: Tell me something our members don't know about GPB that they might find interesting. 
 
TB: GPB has been building a strong reputation nationally in terms of the quality of our news coverage. Our reporters are frequently featured in NPR newscasts and features. We also have a lot of important people coming to our building to be interviewed for national and other programs. Several times a week, NPR programs like News and Notes, Fresh Air and Talk of the Nation interview their Atlanta guests remotely from our facility. Major organizations like the BBC, and Canadian Broadcasting also conduct interviews using our facilities. Consequently, we get to meet a lot of fascinating people on a daily basis.

PBS' First-Ever Primetime Animated Series Inspired By NPR'S Popular "Car Talk" Premieres Wednesday, July 9 at 8 PM 
Tom and Ray Magliozzi, the didactic duo whose voices grace the GPB Radio airwaves every Saturday at 10 AM on the ever-popular radio show Car Talk, are moving themselves into the world of animation with the all-new primetime series Click & Clack's As The Wrench Turns, premiering Wednesday July 9 at 8 PM on PBS. 
 
The program takes off from the hit NPR show and follows the on- and off-air escapades of Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers (alteregos of Tom and Ray Magliozzi) as they try to fLX cars, fend off disgruntled customers and seek out increasingly creative ways to goof off. Click & Clack's As The Wrench Turns is set at Car Talk Plaza, a fictional building that houses their 
 
Click and Clack immerse themselves in such motley misadventures as a competition with a nearby garage, a run-in with the feds in their garage and a robot
