NEW PBS SERIES OFFERS INTIMATE LOOK AT LIFE ABOARD A U.S. AIRCRAFT l,ltl I 1:1 Filmmakers Given Unparalleled Access to Document Stories During Six-Month Deployment to Persian Gulf Sunday-Thursday, April27- May 1, 9- 11 PM on GPB As Captain Ted Branch puts it, "The USS Nimitz is a fine ship ... a great one, but the heart and soul is not the steel, it's the crew:' CARRIER, a 10-hour, character-driven, total immersion in the highstakes world of the nuclear aircraft carrier, isn't so much the story of a ship as the story of shipmates. CARRIER, filmed in high definition, airs SundayThursday, April27-May 1, 9- 11 PM on GPB. Granted unprecedented access to film both the mundane and thrilling aspects of life aboard this floating city, the 17-member production crew embedded with the strike group for six months, captu ring the experiences of the men and women who launch and fly the jets, build the bombs, prepare the meals, do the laundry and generally run the Nimitz on a fu ll deployment from San Diego to the Persian Gulf and back. Nonfiction programming at its dramatic best, CARRIER closely follows a core group of participants, from the elite fighter pilots to the youngest sailors and everyone in between, as they navigate personal conflicts around their jobs, families, faith, patriotism, love, the rites of passage and the war on terror. The production crew lived through the deployment with them, and the result on screen is a remarkable intimacy. Viewers come to feel that they really know these men and women who are out there defending American interests abroad. "Living on board an aircraft carrier is an incredible experience;' said executive producer/director Maro Chermayeff. "It truly is a high-stakes environment where literally one misstep can get you seriously injured - or worse. At the same time, it's like living 24/7 in a high school. Many of the sai lors are still teenagers. They form cliques, they gossip and they generally act like kids back home. But these young sailors and Marines are saddled with tremendous responsibilities , loading bombs on Credit:Jeff Dupre/Carrier Project Sailors "manning the rails" aboard the USS Nimitz jets and launching pilots on high -stakes missions over Iraq. Not your average 9-to-5 job." Nuclear power propels the mammoth aircraft carrier through the water, but it's the 5,000-plus sailors and Marines, with an average age of 19, who keep the ship functioning and battle-ready. Performing tasks that are alternately fraught with danger and mind-numbingly dull , the crew is a representative sample of America's meltingpot: black, white, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, and representing a broad spectrum of religious beliefs. Their reasons for enlisting vary. Airman Chris Altice, for example, joined to save money for college. just before the Nimitz sailed, he found out that his girlfriend of only a few months is pregnant. From half-way around the globe, he struggles to maintain contact, worrying that she may be seeing someone else and coming to grips with impending On The Cover: Carrier premiers Apri/27 Credit: PBS . .-..;--y~...~ '" ' . - . . t 4 L ' fa therhood. He tells his pals, ''I'm only 21 yea rs old; I've already been around the wo rld and now I've got a kid on the way. What the hell happened?" In the testosterone-laden atmosphere of the ai r wing, two female F- 18 pilots, Laurie Coffey and Alex Dietrich, are trying to hold their own among their fraternity brothers. Both women are great pilots and love what they do, but frustrations do exist. There are days, says Dietrich, when she's glad to have 34 brothers and days when she wishes she had "zero"because "guys are different. Sometimes you don't want to talk about sports and fl ying:' Nonetheless, both women are committed to executing the mission they've been tasked with. According to producer Deborah Dickson, Marine Co rps Gunnery Sergea nt Ra ndy Brock is one of the most extraordinary ind iv iduals she has ever encountered in film . Brock's parents abandoned him at a ca rniva l when he was three yea rs old. Like many of the sa ilors and Marines on the Nimitz, Brock has found a fa mily in the military. He is the "daddy" of his unit on boa rd ship. This deploy ment is es peciall y hard on him becau e his wife is stateside, ex pec ting their firs t child . Brock agonizes about fatherhood, wo ndering if he'll be a good Dad."My biggest fea r;' he says, "is turning into the perso n I came from:' Lonnie Fields served as a lieutenant and V2 Division officer and was promoted to lieutenant commander. Asix- month absence places a heavy burden on relationships. The "Tige r Cruise" allows sailors to invite their fa mily members aboard the Nimitz for th e last leg of the de pl oyment. Lieutenant Lonnie Field s' 11 -yea r-old so n will join him on this part of the cruise, giving fa ther and son time to rebuild the bonds that have been strained during thei r long separation. This is a critical ti me for them both , as a fa mily tragedy involvi ng the boy's mother still affects them both. There are many more engaging personalit ies and stories in the series. Produce r jeff Dupre F-18pilot Alex Dietrich served as a lieutenant, juniorgrade, and was promoted to lieutenant with Strike Fighter Squadron 41 (VFA-4 1). sa id that he ca me away with "tremendous respect fo r the men and women who serve in our milita ry, doing tough jobs during di fficult times, but also, like all of us, dea ling with a variety of personal issues that everyone ca n identify with." In addition, he regularly steps from behind the studio microphone to report on news and sports for other GPB programs, includ ing Georgia Gazette. This yea r he has also become a key part of GPB's Atlanta Sy mphony Orchestra coverage. Preview caught up with Edga r recently after his Morning Edition shift to let our members find out more about him. Preview: How long have you been with GPB, and where have our listeners heard you before? ET: I've been with GPB since December 2006. Sports-minded listeners may remember me from my time in the commercial radio world as a sports anchor and reporter in Atlanta and across Georgia covering all of our regional professional, college and high school sports. Preview: What is the most cha llenging part of being a part of GPB's Morning Edition broadcast? ET: Aside from the early-morning wakeup call? Probably making sure I'm putting together and writing a well-balanced newscast for the statewide listeners every half-hour. It's a fun and rewarding challenge, and keeps me busy and focused. Preview: What is the most interesting story you've covered in the past year? ET: It's hard to choose one in the past year. The continuing drought in Georgia and the Southeast has perhaps been the story with the most angles and wide-reaching impact. The fall of Atlanta superstar quarterback Michael Vick for dog fighting brought a strong response from many of our listeners. Preview: You will also be playing a role in GPB Radio's Atlanta Symphony Orchestra broadcasts on Thursday nights in 2008. How did that come about? ET: My background as a violinist is at play here. I played violin in high school at Stone Mountain and I was a violin performance major in college at Northwestern. I look forward to adding ASO musician interviews to my duty roster with GPB. Edgar Treiguts Preview: Where do you live, and what do you do in your spare time? ET: I live north of Atlanta in Cobb County. Free time for me includes playing and watching sports, runn ing and biking, playing violin of course, and wa lking my 8-year-old chow-mix dog Tanner. Preview: What is your favorite GPB Radio program? ET: Morning Edition of course. I know it the most intimately. The show began seven years ago, and features a cast of some 25 volunteers, not including musicians. The live show is run like an 'oldtime' radio show, and is North Georgia's own variatio n on A Prairie Home Companion.
