October 2008 4 What's it like to be a morning person? "I imagine our listeners rising each morning eager to hear what's happening. My own experience might be catted Xtreme Morning. I start my day at NPR Wl>st at 12:01 am. With my morning coffee, I find myselftalking to Gregory Peifer as he hops a ride on a Russian truck roiling into Georgia; catching a word with woman seiling doth in market in Nairobi; quizzing a Marine General in Anbar Province about handing over to Iraqi forces what was once the deadliest place in Iraq. When the show is over, it's stilt early enough for me to go out. One day, it's to LA's county jail, for a story on the hundreds ofmentally itt inmates housed there. Another day, it's to a movie studio to interview Tom Hanks. Why I love hosting the show is not so different from why folks tune in. Morning Edition allows ail ofus -- together -- to discover and engage with ail that a new day can bring. " "''m writing on the morning after Barack Obama 's convention speech, which is also the morning ofJohn McCain's vice p residential choice. It's the kind of morning I love. we are constantly updating the news with live interviews. There's a different kind ofmorning I love. I think ofthe morning I spent on a smati boat in a Nigerian swamp, skipping over the waves on our way to a village that was impossible to reach by road. My job was to meet some ofthe most competling people in the world and introduce them to listeners who would never otherwise meet them. As host ofMorning Edition, I've spent mornings at an Ohio women's prison, a Baghdad morgue, a Pennsylvania church, and a Canadian diamond mine. I don 't like going to bed early, but I like being up before dawn. I like the sense ofpossibility in the day ahead. Day after day, it seems like anything could happen. " Meet GPB Regional Morning Edition Host Edgar Treiguts Edgar Treiguts has quickly become one ofGPB Radio's signature voices, serving as the regional hostfor Morning Edition MondayFriday from 5 AM- 9AM. In addition, he regularly steps from behind the studio microphone to report on news and sports for other GPB programs, including Georgia Gazette. This year he has also become a key part ofGPB's Atlanta Symphony Orchestra coverage. Experience caught up with Edgar recently after his Morning Edition shift to let our members find out more about him. experience: How long have you been with GPB, and where have our listeners heard you before? ET: I've been with GPB since December 2006. Sports-minded listeners may remember me from my time in the commercial radio world as a sports anchor and reporter in Atlanta and across Georgia covering atl of our regional profess ional, college and high school sports. experience: What is the most challenging part of being a part of GPB's Morning Edition broadcast? ET: Aside from the early-mornin~ wakeup call? Probably making sure I'm putting together and wnring a well-balanced newscast for the statewide listeners every half-hour. It's a fun and rewarding challenge, and keeps me busy and focused. experience: What is the most interesting story you've covered in the past year? ET: It's hard to choose one in the past year. The continuing drought in Georgia and the Southeast has perhaps been the story with the most angles and wide-reaching impact. T he fall of Atlanta superstar quarterback Michael Vick for dog fighting brought a strong response from many of our listeners. experience: You've also played a role in GPB Radio's Atlanta Symphony Orchestra broadcasts on T hursday nights this year. How did that come about? ET: My background as a violinist is at play here. I played violin in high school at Stone Mountain and I was a violin performance major in college at Northwestern. I look forward to adding ASO musician interviews to my duty roster with GPB. experience: Where do you live, and what do you do in your spare time? ET: I live north ofAtlanta in Cobb County. Free time for me includes !?laying and watching sports, running and biking, playing vtolin of course, and walking my 8-year-old chow-mix dog Tanner. experience: What is your favorite GPB Radio program? ET: Morning Edition of course. I know it the most intimately. 5 www.gpb.org Support Quality Programs for Your Family MONDAY FRIDAY 6 AM Word World (cc) 6:30 Dragon Tales (cc) 1 ' ... 7:00 Curious George (cc) !& 7:30 Sid The Science Kid (cc) ( 8:00 Super Why! This GPB-produced weekly program will feature interviews with the notable public and private-sector Georgians driving these types of initiatives and changes. Along with the weekly spotlight interview, Sustainable Georgia will also feature byte-sized information from around the state, weekly Georgia Earth News, the Isla Earth feature, and even "recycled music"-songs you may have missed with an environmental message. Sustainable Georgia will be interactive as well. You can email the show at gogreen@gpb.org , and listen on demand or post to our blog at www.gpb.org/gogreen. Sus ainable Rghtingtown Creek In Fannin County, Georgia. According to Rob Maynard , "our goal with the program is to give a wider audience to good ideas that can make Georgia communities more livable today and in the future. If we can do that, keep our sense of humor and be entertaining, we 'll be hitting the mark for our members and the larger public radio audience. I look forward to hearing from our members once they've had a chance to listen to Sustainable Georgia. I expect much of our content will eventually be user-generated ideas coming from grass roots responses like theirs." Sustainable Georgia will air adjacent to the new Weekend Georgia Gazette at 12:30 PM on Saturdays, rebroadcast at 4:30PM Sundays and again on Tuesday nights at 11:30 PM after the daily rebroadcast of Georgia Gazette. Earty Music Via Hannonia Returns To GPB From the sublime sounds of chant, to the joyful exuberance of a Renaissance dance, to the passion of an Italian Baroque violin sonata, the music of the past flows into the present on Harmonia , as players, singers and scholars bring historically informed performances to life for today's listeners. Produced at WFIU from Indiana University, Harmonia returns to GPB's statewide airwaves Monday nights at 10 PM and explores music from the Middle Ages to the first part of the 17th century. RM NIA Each week, host and early music scholar Angela Mariani brings the increasingly popular music of these earlier periods to life for rad io audiences, drawing upon commercial, private and rare archival recordings, as well as interviews with performers and scholars. Angela offers engaging and accessible cultural, social and historical context, along with evocative commentary that illustrates, informs and enlightens.
