It is essential to the democratic process to provide young people with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to take an active role in their community and to understand the responsibilities of citizens in a representative government. Every two years, the Georgia Department of Education (DOE), the Georgia Secretary of State's office and Georgia Public Broadcasting partner to bring Civics Day and Mock Election activities to Georgia students. Civics Day is Monday, October 26th, 1998, and is an opportunity for all students in grades K-12 to participate in pre-election activities (including mock voting) and recognize the importance of civic involvement. On Wednesday, October 28, the results of statewide voting among students in grades 8-12 will be announced in a live broadcast of Student Voices 1998: The Georgia Student Mock Election, on GPTV, 7-8 PM. The results of student voting on the Governor's race and other key state contests will be announced, and students will engage in a lively discus- sian of several topical issues, including ones on the November ballot. Schools interested in participating in Mock Election and Civics Day activities can request information packets by contacting their system's social studies coordinator or Nannette McGee at DOE, (404) 651-7271. PeachStar offers a variety of programming that can be used to support the civics curriculum. Check the "Theme Packet" article on the back cover for a list of relevant programs that will air on Channel 410 in October. Participation in Civics Day and the Mock Election is also a great way to involve parents in their child's learning. Families are encouraged to watch the Mock Election broadcast together. Student voting results often are an accurate predictor of the outcome of the real election. Will Georgia students predict the winner in this year's races? Watch GPTV October 28 at 7 PM. Student Voices 1998 will re-air on Channel410, Thursday, Oct. 29 at 2:30PM & Friday, Oct. 30 at 11:30 AM. Georgia Students Get Their Say Political commentator Bill Nigut (second from right) and Georgia students discuss the issues on the 1996 Georgia Mock Election program which was broadcast live, statewide on GPTV. PeachStar Expands 1998-99 Curriculum Offerings October 1998 Georgia schools have two excellent resources for studying foreign languages and cultures of other countries. SALSA, introduced last spring via PeachStar, is an introductory Spanish language and culture series for young children and is free to all Georgia schools. At the middle school level Irasshai Explorer, a multimedia exploratory resource in Japanese language and culture, is available to Georgia schools in a classroom-complete package for $400, one-half the national rate. SALSA's Success Track Keeps Growing On October 28, SALSA will begin its fall curriculum schedule on PeachStar to classrooms throughout the nation. In its premier broadcast in January 1998, the 30-part Spanish language acquisition series received overwhelming acceptance in classrooms where no Spanish teacher is available and as a supplemental teaching tool for Spanish teachers. SALSA's storybased curriculum approach, the "advance-organizer" for teachers, and its entirely-in-Spanish presentation are key to its success. The SALSA Activity Guide, sold separately to Georgia schools for $5.00, is an additional tool that teachers find helpful in expanding the benefits of SALSA. This year SALSA is off to another great start with 12 additional programs currently in production. Special Rate for Georgia Middle Schools "Lobo" the wolf appears in "Little Red Riding Hood" and frequently throughout the SALSA series, an introductory Spanish language and culture resource for young children. Entirely in Spanish, the series uses familiar stories, puppets, lively animation and large doses of fun to keep children engaged while they learn. SALSA is designed for use by teachers who have no background in Spanish or as a supplemental tool for Spanish teachers. Irasshai Explorer, a video-based Japanese language and culture exploratory course, will be in use in a number of Georgia middle schools this term as well as in schools as far away as New York and Hawaii. For $400, a special rate available exclusively to Georgia middle schools, Georgia teachers receive a complete exploratory course package that includes 12 independent video lessons, a Teacher Resource Guide and a Student Activity Guide. A web site is also available for further studies. Additional textbooks may be purchased for $19.95 each, another special rate for Georgia middle schools. Designed for maximum flexibility in the classroom, Irasshai Explorer can be used as a stand-alone, six- to 12-week Japanese language and culture exploratory course or as a supplement to a social studies unit on Asian studies. Teachers do not need to be conversant in Japanese. Irasshai Explorer expertly guides the teacher and the students to a fascinating discovery of Japanese language and culture. For more information about SALSA and Irasshai Explorer, call the PeachStar Foreign Language Hotline, (800) 222-6006, Ext. 2554. Yours could be among the first middle schools in the country to offer Japanese. Teachers of any language, social studies, or any other subject can easily teach this exciting new course. Irasshai Explorer is specifically designed to work as a complete exploratory Japanese language course or as a supplement to a social studies program. Correction The PeachStar Education Resources Order Form on page 30 of the August/September Pipeline contained two pricing errors. Individual copies of the Irasshai Explorer Teacher Guide cost $100.00. Individual copies of the Irasshai Explorer text book cost $19.95. We apologize for the errors. 3 PeachStar Pipeline A key to abbreviations used in the following program listings appears on page 2 11/09 11/10 11/11 11/12 11/13 216: Love Notes for Muffy/D.W. More award winning ways to present the ..big ideas.. of algebra to your students. ~~ Oklahoma State University A lhlque Sloff Development Program Getting Ready for Algebra introduces teachers to content, pedagogy, equity, and assessment models that help their students build a proper foundation for Algebra and prepare them for success. It is a live, interactive program offered during the school day while teachers are with their class -- no weekends, no evenings, and no substitutes needed. How does it work? Each module will have activities to be completed during 3 class periods. Day 1: Students work in class on Worksheet I activities with the teacher acting as facilitator. The Worksheet I teacher's version has suggestions for adapting the activities to fit the needs of the class. Day 2: A live interactive telecast by Dr. Jim Choike introduces the students and teacher to the "big idea" of the unit. Using toll-free telephone lines, students may ask and answer questions. Dr. Choike will also prepare students for the remaining activities of the unit. Day 3: Activities and worksheets extend and challenge the students to further explore the "big idea" of the unit with the help of the classroom teacher. And it is FREE! Just mail or fax this form today. The Atlanta chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), the organization that presents the Emmys, is offering free workshops to middle schools in Georgia to help students become media literate, so they can make wiser decisions about television viewing. Ken Daniel, Executive Producer for Local Production at Georgia Public Television, is offering this workshop to Georgia schools. Ken has a 30-year background as a television producer/director and actor. The workshop will familiarize students and teachers with techniques used in television to communicate and elicit responses from viewers. This is a "hands-on" workshop, where everyone will participate. For information, contact Jennifer Griffin, (404) 685-2457. Magic School Bus Update PeachStar has learned that school rights for Magic School Bus have been extended to the year 2000. The extension, unfortunately, does not cover PeachStar and PBS broadcast rights. We cannot air the programs again. At press time we did not know whether #100-400 programs would be repeated on Fox Kids Network, the series' new home; we do know teachers can use any programs the network broadcasts. Remember: A taped program must be used within 10 calendar days of the program's original broadcast. The program can be used within the classroom twice. After that the teacher can retain the program for an additional 35 days for private reference and review, not for use in the classroom. After 45 days, the tape must be erased. Check your local Fox Kids' Network station for the broadcast schedule or find it on the web at or . Attention Art Teachers! On October 7, Michelangelo Restored (9-10 PM) and Picasso Paints Picasso (10-11 PM) will air on GPTV (Channel400 on your satellite equipment). These programs have year-long taping rights for educational use in the classroom. Japanese Chamber of Commerce Supports Georgia Schools A generous contribution by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Georgia will soon enhance the study of the Japanese in high schools across the state. The Chamber is providing a collection of Japanese artifacts to each school in Georgia offering Japanese, including the many schools enrolled in Irasshai, PeachStar Education Services' award-winning distance learning series in Japanese language and culture. Irasshai is a two-year, for-credit course that any classroom teacher can facilitate. Did You Ever Wish... ...you could offer a class or a staff development session for your school system over PeachStar's satellite network? Well, that wish is quite possible. And, not only could your presentation be broadcast, but its reception could be restricted to only those sites you wish to receive it. For example-- During the last school year, we worked with the Fulton County School System to broadcast a staff development presentation. Only Fulton County Schools were able to receive the presentation, which was broadcast with a live studio audience out of one of our distance learning studios. PeachStar's staff will be happy to work with you to develop any idea you may have for delivering presentations -- system wide or to designated receiving sites. Whether it's a course for students or a professional development series for your staff, if it's distance learning, call on PeachStar. We are here to help. And Don't Forget ... If You Need Technical Assistance Call the Satellite Help Desk 1-800-877-7805 Monday-Friday 7:30 AM-4:30PM Where We'll Be PeachStar staff will participate in these professional conferences during October.
