Still, it's satisfying when somebody notices our work. And somebody has noticed Georgia, again. At the national level. Last month two Georgia government projects earned inclusion among finalists for the 2019 NASCIO State IT Recognition Awards . Both the Georgia Cyber Center and a Georgia Department of Agriculture mobile app are finalists in the highly regarded annual technology awards from the National Association of State Chief Information Officers. Innovative use of IT is at the heart of projects recognized by NASCIO. That's certainly evident in the finalists from our state. My congratulations to the teams behind the Georgia efforts. And to the state's Chief Digital Officer Nikhil Deshpande who will receive a NASCIO State Technology Innovator Award. (See details about the Georgia honorees in an article below.) We aim to encourage and celebrate that same theme of innovation with the GTA-sponsored Technology Innovation Showcase Awards. Remember, we'll present those soon to outstanding Georgia state and local government IT-enabled projects at the Georgia Digital Government Summit . I encourage your participation at the summit, September 23-24 in Atlanta. A slate of strong speakers will address hot topics from the government technology realm we all call home. (See more about this year's line-up below.) You'll learn from the speakers, of course. Just as valuable, you'll learn from each other. The summit is a great opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with folks who may well be tackling the same or similar issues your agency faces . That's true for IT professionals and other leaders. It's an exciting time to be in government IT, and a challenging time. The hurdles keep coming, as we see so plainly from something like the ransomware attacks increasingly targeting state and local government. We're fortunate to have a highly capable community of IT professionals daily advancing the state's interests. The NASCIO recognition points to the caliber of that Georgia team, in agencies and entities large and small statewide. T hank you for your ongoing support. Two technology projects from the state have been named finalists in NASCIO's State IT Recognition Awards and will be recognized at the National Association of State Chief Information Officers' annual conference in October. The Georgia Cyber Center is a finalist in the category of cross-boundary collaboration and partnerships. Thousands of students and workers from local, state, and federal agencies have attended college classes or participated in specialized training at the center since it opened in July 2018. Many others have attended cybersecurity-related events, including meetings, conferences, hackathons, and capture-the-flag competitions. In addition, several leading technology companies have set up offices at the center. The Department of Agriculture is also a finalist in the category of information communications technology innovations for a mobile app it developed to help state inspectors ensure Georgia's food supply is safe. The Mobile Field Data Collection app uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and replaces paper forms with electronic surveys. These surveys about facilities such as grocery stores and food-processing plants are accessible on mobile devices. The app was first used after Hurricane Michael in 2018 and allowed state inspectors to complete 1,400 digital surveys in the same amount of time just 400 paper surveys required after Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Meanwhile, Georgia's Chief Digital Officer Nikhil Deshpande will be honored with NASCIO's State Technology Innovator Award. This award recognizes outstanding individuals who've advanced service delivery through technology. Nikhil leads GTA's Digital Services Georgia (DSGa) team. Under his guidance, the DSGa team has introduced cutting-edge technologies and design enhancements on the state's enterprise digital platform. 9/18/2019, 1:27 PM
