SENIOR LEADERSHIP PLANNING SESSION
Members of the executive leadership team recently held a two-day work session to discuss strategies for addressing state-mandated budget reductions. The strategies were then presented to the Board of Corrections for their input and support.
At the close of the meeting, Arnie DePetro was presented with a certificate by his peers, in recognition of his 34 years of service with the Department.

DIRECTOR OF PROBATION OPERATIONS WINS GPA AWARD
On August 15, the Georgia Probation Association (GPA) awarded the Lee Broome Memorial Award of Excellence to Stan Cooper, Director of Probation Operations. The Lee Broome Memorial Award of Excellence is the most prestigious award given to current and retired members.
Cooper has been a member of GPA for 18 years and has served on the executive board as first and second vice president, president, and immediate past president. He has been with the Department of Corrections since 1987.

GCI HOLDS EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY
Georgia Correctional Industries (GCI), held their quarterly employee appreciation day at their corporate office in Decatur on August 20. More than 50 employees and guests attended the event, including Assistant Commissioner, Brian Owens.
GCI is a self-supporting business that gives inmates valuable job training and provides goods and services to government agencies to generate operating revenue. GCI has factories at 17 prisons across the state.

AUTRY & COASTAL STATE PRISONS APPOINT NEW WARDENS
The Department of Corrections announced the appointment of two wardens last month. Warden Terry Duffey will oversee 1631 inmates and 417 staff members at Autry State Prison in Pelham. Warden Duffey has been with the Department for 26 years. Warden Thomas Ammons will oversee 1578 inmates and 432 staff members at Coastal State Prison in Garden City. Warden Ammons has also been with the Department for 26 years.
GDC RECOGNIZED FOR ORGANIZATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT
The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) was selected as the first recipient of the Georgia School of Addiction Studies (GSAS), Excellence in Addiction Treatment Award for Organizational Achievement. The second annual awards luncheon, "Pillars of Prevention, Treatment and Recovery," was held Thursday, August 21, 2008 at the Augusta Marriott Hotel. GDC received a transferable scholarship to the 2009 GSAS conference.
"The mission of GSAS parallels one of the goals and ultimate mission of the GDC," said Commissioner James E. Donald. "This collaboration between GDC and GSAS is critical in promoting a healthier and safer Georgia."

provide the opportunity for identified GDC counselors to
become certified addiction counselors in order to better serve the growing population of offenders with substance
