There are more than 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. Being a cancer survivor ranks at the top of the list for anyone diagnosed or has had a loved one diagnosed with cancer. Millions of cancer survivors will celebrate their health and personal cancer journeys on Sunday, June 7 for National Cancer Survivors Day. The 2015 Photo Voice Project participants and cancer survivors were recently recognized at a reception and photography exhibit held at the Albany Museum of Art. PHNEWS Winning the Battle Against Diabetes: An Inspirational Wellness Story for Men's Health Month Matthew Carter, III, 46, is a procurement manager for the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) where he is responsible for bid solicitations, contracts and routine purchases. Carter is as serious about managing thousands of annual contracts and millions of dollars in government funds for DPH as he is about controlling his diabetes. Matt Carter is leading by example as Georgia celebrates Men's Health Month 2015. As a type 2 diabetic, Carter controls his diabetes with daily exercise and better food choices. The drive to make health a lifelong priority is an inspirational message Carter and public health leaders from the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) want to share with all men in Georgia this June for Men's Health Month 2015. Carter is a type 2 diabetes patient, but that diagnosis did not stop him. Originally from Dalton, Holden earned both a registered nursing degree and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tenn. in 1984. The Diabetes Self-Management Program, a Stanford University Self-Management workshop, was presented by certified trainers, Ms. Beadie Davison from CCBOH and Ms. Elaine Jackson from Clayton County Senior Services. Beadie Davidson led a group of Clayton County residents in an informative workshop designed to help participants learn how to manage diabetes through proper planning and positive health behaviors. The six-week workshop successfully instructed clients on the proper way to monitor and self-manage their diabetes. Participants learned how to set goals, create an action plan, keep a journal to measure their progress and develop problem solving techniques if they fall short of their goals.
