April 2016 > IN THIS ISSUE: First-Time Camper Program, Hidden Gem Events, New Cabins First-Time Camper Program Introduces Novices to Sleeping Under the Stars Avid campers know the gooey fun of toasting marshmallows over a fire, but for those who have never slept in a tent, spending the night outdoors can be an intimidating adventure. Through Georgia State Parks' First-Time Camper Program, curious guests can see if they enjoy sleeping under the stars before investing in their own gear. Never camped before? Give it a try! Park Activities New Cabins & More Overnight guests will notice new and improved accommodations at many Georgia State Parks this vacation season. You'll find yurts at Sweetwater Creek (Lithia Springs), sportsman's cabins at Laura S. Walker (Waycross) and adventure cabins at Fort Yargo (Winder). Cabin renovations are underway at Vogel (Blairsville), Crooked River (St. Marys) and Fort Mountain (Chatsworth). Later this year, a renovated campground will open at Hard Labor Creek (Rutledge). Reservations are accepted 13 months in advance by calling 1-800864-7275 or at GeorgiaStateParks.org. Camping at Rugged Tallulah Gorge Tallulah Gorge State Park recently assumed management of its campground, which previously had been operated by Georgia Power. Both RV and tent campers can now make online reservations to stay inside one of Georgia's most scenic natural playgrounds, offering hiking trails, overlooks, a suspension bridge, interpretive center and film. Make reservations by calling 800-864-7275 or at GaStateParks.org. Annual "whitewater releases" from the dam will be the first two weekends in April, attracting expert kayakers from all over the U.S. Visitors may watch from rim trails (no gorge floor access). Disc Golf Disc golf is a fun way to get exercise while enjoying the great outdoors. Players can make it as easy-going or as challenging as they wish, and nearly any age can play. The objective is to throw Frisbee-style discs into a series of baskets, somewhat like hitting golf balls into holes. Four state parks offer the game: Cloudland Canyon (northwest Georgia), Fort Yargo (Winder), Richard B. Russell (Elberton) and Georgia Veterans (Cordele). If you're looking for a spirited outing with friends or family, give disc golf a try.
