Summer jobs with HABS/HAER/HALS Jim Cothran remembered James R. Cothran died on January 29 in Atlanta. Jim was a beloved teacher and friend to many of HPD's staff and other Georgia preservationists. HPD's historic resources section chief and deputy SHPO Richard Cloues said, "Jim Cothran was a truly unique individual -- a scholar, a practitioner, and a gentleman. While serving on the Georgia National Register Review Board (1996-99), he freely and collegially shared his personal insights and interpretations of Georgia's landscape history with Board members and staff. In the most gentle yet profound ways, he enhanced our understanding of and appreciation for Georgia's historic landscapes at a time when much of this was new ground for historic preservation. His expertise and congeniality will be so greatly missed." In a message to students, Richard Laub, director of the Heritage Preservation program at Georgia State University and a former HPD staff member, said, "Jim has taught our Historic Landscapes and Garden class in the Heritage Program for 20 years. I know many of you have been touched by Jim's life as a personal friend, professional associate or as a student and are better for that contact. Jim was a genuinely warm person who had a true passion for the historic landscape and the sharing of that passion. He will be missed by our program and all of those who care for our Southern Landscapes."
