National Register news Pleasant Valley Historic District The Pleasant Valley Historic District, located south of Crandall (Murray County), was listed in the National Register on September 24, 2009. Historic development in Pleasant Valley began in 1832 with the Cherokee Land Lottery that opened the area to white settlement. It contains intact, historic farmsteads and land use patterns associated with historic agricultural practices that have remained since the early 1800s to the present day. Farms in the valley have received Centennial Family Farm awards that recognize their continued use for over 100 years. The Building at 6 and 7 Public Square The Building at 6 and 7 Public Square in downtown Elberton (Elbert County) was listed in the National Register on September 24, 2009. Completed in 1908, the double storefront served as a post office on one side and a jewelry store on the other. It is an excellent representative example of commercial buildings that were constructed in small towns throughout Georgia in the first decades of the 20th century. In Bowman, most of the commercial buildings on the square were built in the early 1900s with brick walls and storefronts supported by cast-iron columns to allow larger display windows. Call for Entries: 2010 Preservation Awards The National Register-listed William Barker Whiskey Bonding Barn in Pike County received a 2009 Preservation Award for Excellence in Rehabilitation. The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking nominations for its 2010 Preservation Awards. The awards program recognizes preservation projects and individuals in the state who have made significant contributions to the field of historic preservation. Awards are presented on the basis of the contributions of the person or project to the community and/or state and on compliance to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Atlanta library listed on the 2010 WMF Watch List The Atlanta-Fulton Central Public Library has been included on the 2010 World Monuments Fund (WMF) Watch List. Completed in 1980, the Brutalist building was designed by renowned Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer. In November 2008, legislation was passed to direct public funds to the construction of new central library, which could result in the destruction of the existing building. The WMF is a private, worldwide organization dedicated to preserving important architectural and cultural heritage sites. Available grants Battlefield Project Grants, American Battlefield Protection Program of the National Park Service The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) of the National Park Service invites non-profit groups, academic institutions, and local, regional, state, and tribal governments, and other private sector organizations to submit applications for grants. The purpose of this grant program is to provide seed money for projects that lead directly to the identification, preservation and interpretation of battlefield land and/or historic sites associated with battlefields. National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Public Programs grants The Division of Public Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities funds public projects at museums, libraries, historic sites, and other historical and cultural organizations. The organization offers grants that support historic site interpretation, exhibits, reading or film discussion series, symposia, and digital projects. Coastal Incentive grants, Georgia Coastal Resources Division The Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is administering Coastal Incentive grants to Qualified Local Governments, non-DNR state agencies, and educational institutions within the 11-county coastal area. Successful grants allow regional and local coastal issues to be defined and addressed creatively and proactively at the grass-roots level.
