The Empire Building in Columbus is to be rehabilitated into apartments. On November 16 the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced the recipients of nine Historic Rehabilitation Grants. Among the recipients is Affordable Housing Solutions, Inc., a Georgia non-profit. The organization was granted $100,000 to rehabilitate the National Registerlisted Empire Building in Columbus into 23 one-bedroom apartments. The rehabilitation is also being supported by substantial Federal and State tax incentives administered by HPD. Constructed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style circa 1896, the building is located at the intersection of 12th Street and 1st Avenue. For more information on the grant program read the press release at www.preservationnation.org/about-us/presscenter/press-releases/2009/knight-grants-2009.html. Visit www.gashpo.org/content/displaynavigation.asp? TopCategory=199 to read about the tax incentives available for the rehabilitation of historic properties in Georgia. Trail of Tears site added to National Heritage Trail The Big Spring area in Cedartown contains the site of the removal camp. On November 9 the Cedar Town Removal Camp in Cedartown was listed as a certified site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. It is the first removal camp in Georgia to be included. The Trail, which was originally established by an act of Congress in 1987, was expanded earlier this year to include Georgia. The Omnibus Public Lands Bill incorporated for the first time the 1838 round-up event as part of the Trail of Tears story. Cedar Town now joins the Chief Vann House, the Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home, the Ross to Ridge Road, the Chief John Ross House, and the New Echota State Historic Site on the list of official Trail of Tears certified sites in Georgia. Between May and July, 1838, the United States military rounded up more than 3,000 members of the Cherokee Nation in Georgia and marched them to camps in Tennessee where they waited to be deported west. The Cedartown camp was one of 14 Georgia camps and forts built by military forces for the removal. It is the southernmost camp or fort site on the Trail of Tears. Today the site is within Big Spring Park, an area that is listed in the National Register, though not for its association with the Trail of Tears. The listing includes the Cedartown Waterworks, Woman's Building, and Big Spring Park Historic District. For more information visit the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association at www.gatrailoftears.org. National Register layer available for Google Earth The National Park Service has created downloadable Google Earth layers of properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Used alongside the Google Earth program, the information will display listed properties on a map. The information is current through the beginning of 2007. It is provided for informational purposes only; some coordinates may not be entirely accurate. For detailed information and to download visit http://nrhp.focus.nps.gov/natreg/docs/ Download.html. Archive of National Preservation Conference materials now online The National Trust for Historic Preservation has created an archive of information from the National Preservation Conference that was held in Nashville in October 2009. Georgia is represented by The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and DOCOMOMO Georgia. While not definitive, the list does include nearly 200 "Twitterers."
