This issue features the Vienna High and Industrial School, a Rosenwald School that was formerly the Dooly County Training School when it was constructed in 1926. The building was continuously used as a school until 1970, and it served pre-kindergarten students until 2004. Today, the six-classroom building is adaptively used as a Family Resource Center and provides offices for Dooly County Board of Education staff. The Atlanta History Center has unveiled a new exhibit, Slave Life at the Tullie Smith Farm. The exhibit interprets the lives of 14 enslaved men, women and children who lived on the farm. It is housed in a cabin along with other outbuildings that are representative of dwellings that existed in the Georgia Piedmont counties. The Dewey City Historic District in Thomasville was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in August 2008. Dewey City developed as an African American neighborhood over 100 years ago, and has an abundance of bungalows, shotgun houses and churches. The Jack Hadley Black History Museum is located in Dewey City at the old Douglass High School complex. Ann Nixon Cooper, an Atlanta centenarian, celebrated her 107th birthday. Mrs. Cooper made national news when she voted in the recent presidential election. ************************************************************************ New history of DeKalb County available "Historic DeKalb County, An Illustrated History" was written by Vivian Price and published by the Historical Publishing Network. The book is split into two sections. The first section contains both a historical overview of the county's history up through the 20th century and a section on specific topics, such as Camp Gordon, the Candler family, essays on churches, and the dairy industry. There are illustrations throughout and a full-name index in the middle of the book. The second section, entitled "Sharing the Heritage," contains 44 sketches with color illustrations of businesses and institutions in the county. For many of these, this is the only time an official sketch has appeared in print. Books are available form the DeKalb History Center, located in the old DeKalb County courthouse in downtown Decatur. Call 404-373-1088 ext 22 to order. ************************************************************************ National Endowment for the Humanities grants available Challenge grants NEH challenge grants are capacity-building grants, intended to help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for their humanities programs and resources. Grants may be used to establish or enhance endowments or spend-down funds (that is, funds that are invested, with both the income and the principal being expended over a defined period of years) that generate expendable earnings to support ongoing program activities. Funds may also be used for one-time capital expenditures (such as construction and renovation, purchase of equipment, and acquisitions) that bring long-term benefits to the institution and to the humanities more broadly. For more information visit www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/challenge.html or email challenge@neh.gov. Applications are due by May 5. Preservation assistance grants Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions help small and mid-sized institutions, such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges, improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. Awards of up to $6000 support preservation related collection assessments, consultations, training and workshops, and institutional and collaborative disaster and emergency planning. Grants cover consultant fees, workshop registration fees, related travel and per diem expenses, and the costs of purchasing and shipping preservation supplies and equipment. For more information visit www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pag.htmlor email preservation@neh.gov. Applications are due by May 14. ************************************************************************ EPA offers Smart Growth Implementation Assistance The Development, Community, and Environment Division in EPA's Office of Policy, Economics, and Innovation is seeking applications for technical assistance from communities that want to incorporate smart growth in their future development to meet environmental and other community goals.
