Welcome to this, the first issue to feature our new look. From now on, Preservation Georgia Online will be sent in an HTML format, similar to a Web page (a plain text version is still viewable). We can now include photos, colors, and more advanced formatting. The content and average length of the newsletter will not change. Common functions like subscribing, unsubscribing, and changing your email address will now be handled through forms via our Web site rather than by email (links to these items appear at the bottom of the message). Lovejoy's Station makes 2009 most endangered list On 18 March, the Civil War Preservation Trust released its most endangered site list. This is an annual event that draws attention to Civil War sites that are either unprotected or partially protected. For 2009, the Georgia Battlefields Association-nominated site of Lovejoy's Station was among 15 additional at-risk sites, as it was in 2007 and 2008. Lovejoy's Station was the site of two battles, both in the final month of the Atlanta Campaign. On August 20, 1864, Kilpatrick's Federal cavalry, raiding against the railroads south of Atlanta, was nearly trapped at Lovejoy's Station but escaped after a desperate charge. Two weeks later, the Confederate army assembled at Lovejoy's Station after evacuating Atlanta. On September 3, S.D. Lee's Corps attempted to drive back the Federal XXIII Corps. Shortly thereafter, Sherman declared an end to the Atlanta Campaign and pulled his armies back to the vicinity of the city, while the Confederate army camped around Lovejoy's Station until mid September.
