Georgia Trust accepting nominations for its 10 Places in Peril The 18th century Rock House in Thomson, a 2009 Places in Peril site. The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is now accepting nominations for its 2010 Places in Peril program. Through a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and generous support from statewide donors and charitable organizations, each Place in Peril will receive direct assistance as part of The Georgia Trust's Partners in the Field program. Jordan Poole, the Trust's field services representative, will visit each designee and work with the local property owners and community leaders to help form a preservation strategy for each 2010 Places in Peril site. Last year, nearly $50,000 in matching grants was given to the 2009 Places in Peril. Omnibus Public Land Management Act is passed On March 30th President Obama signed into law the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. It contains numerous measures important to natural, cultural, and historic resource preservation constituencies, including the authorization of both the Save America's Treasures and Preserve America grant programs. Save America's Treasures grants provide essential funding for restoration and preservation work on nationally significant historic structures and objects. Trail of Tears featured in new PBS series American Experience: We Shall Remain, airing Mondays, April 13 May 11 at 9 PM on GPB, is a groundbreaking five-part miniseries that establishes Native history as an essential part of American history. Five 90-minute documentaries spanning 300 years tell the story of pivotal moments in U.S. history from the Native American perspective. Episode three, The Trail of Tears, was partially filmed in Georgia and focuses on the Cherokee removal. Call for Presentations for the Nationwide Cemetery Preservation Summit The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training is soliciting oral and poster presentations that focus on research and innovation in cemetery conservation and preservation for the its Nationwide Cemetery Preservation Summit, to be held in Nashville, Tennessee on October 19-21, 2009. Topics for presentation may include recent developments in technologies, unique treatments, and creative solutions. Additionally, presentations may explore future directions in cemetery preservation as well as current gaps in research and understanding of issues. Presentations will be reviewed and selected by NCPTT staff. Speakers will be offered a reduced registration fee. The abstract deadline is May 1st. The Recovery Act and historic preservation The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009. The www. Recovery.gov Web site will allow all citizens to monitor the progress of recovery projects and programs. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has created a Web section with information about the Recovery Act and how it relates to historic preservation including what agencies can do to ensure their projects are reviewed under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
