Preservation Georgia Online August 9-15, 2008 In this issue: Recent National Register listings Atlanta BeltLine ARRIS, Journal of the Southeast Chapter, Society of Architectural Historians Preservation events calendar Subscription information ************************************************************************ Recent National Register listings The Dutton-Waller Raised Tybee Cottage, Tybee Island, Chatham County, was listed in the National Register on July 24, 2008. The Dutton-Waller Raised Tybee Cottage was built circa 1938 as a speculative venture for Savannah lawyer Edward Dutton, who later served as mayor of Tybee Island in the 1950s. Dutton sold the cottage to real estate investor and developer Blanche S. Waller in 1940. Waller was the wife of William Penn Waller, owner and operator of Waller Lumber and Supply Company of Savannah. The Wallers, who purchased dozens of investment properties throughout Chatham County, sold the cottage between 1943 and 1947. James J. and Mary Frances O'Neill of Savannah purchased it for a summer residence. The Dutton-Waller cottage has continued to be used as both a summer cottage and a year-round residence. The Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church and School, Whigham, Grady County, was listed in the National Register on July 23, 2008. In 1878 a small group of African Americans purchased land at the northwest edge of Whigham in Grady County and formed the Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church. The congregation worshipped in a log church until it was destroyed by fire in 1920. That year, the current frame church was constructed. Ebenezer African Episcopal Methodist Church and School is significant in architecture because it is an excellent example of a small, wood-frame church, with asymmetrical architecture referencing the Gothic Revival style. Lott Cemetery, located in downtown Waycross, Ware County, was listed in the National Register on July 24, 2008. Dr. Daniel Lott, one of the founders of Waycross in 1872, donated the land for Lott Cemetery to the city and burials began in 1877. Most of the burials in the cemetery date from its beginning through the 1920s, and the cemetery is still active today. Lott Cemetery is significant in art for its numerous examples of late 19th- and 20th- century funerary monuments and ornamental fencing. Decorative grave markers, obelisks, statuary, and ornamental fencing are all representative of the burial practices and funerary symbolism of that time period. The Morgan-Ille Cottage, located on 2nd Avenue, Tybee Island, Chatham County, was listed in the National Register on July 24, 2008. The Morgan-Ille Cottage is a small, frame beach cottage built on Fort Screven at the north end of Tybee Island in circa1930. When built, it served as housing for noncommissioned officers. After World War II, Fort Screven was deactivated and much of its land and many of its buildings were sold. Between 1946 and 1948, Thomas McCarroll purchased the house and moved it to 2nd Avenue, where he remodeled it for resale as a single-family beach cottage. In 1948, John B. Morgan purchased the house as his primary residence. Four years later, he sold the house to Edward E. and Norma W. Ille. The Illes, who lived in Augusta, purchased the house to use as a summer beach house. The Morgan-Ille Cottage remains in the Ille family. Public involvement is integral to this process and is vital throughout the study. There will be many forums for public involvement, one of which is through Scoping Meetings. Public Scoping Meetings are taking place next Tuesday and Thursday. The BeltLine Environmental Study would appreciate your attendance. These meetings are important because they will get the public involved early in the process. If you have any questions about this project, please call the Project Hotline at 404-5422070.
