To augment its park maintenance staff of five, the park has hired six undergraduate and graduate students majoring in historic preservation at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). This park preservation team focused this season on tuck-pointing deteriorated mortar joints throughout the fort as well as at the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. To get started, the team took two-weeks of intensive historic lime mortar training led by experts from San Juan National Historic Site. As part of the training, the Fort Pulaski preservation team analyzed mortar samples from the fort to develop a specific mix of lime mortar suited to the existing historic mortar. While re-pointing is exciting on its own, the team is also being trained to fire the park's historic black powder cannons and will be involved in living history programs throughout the year. http://www.nps.gov/fopu - excerpt from Heritage News, September 2007 http://heritagenews.cr.nps.gov/index/Index.cfm ************************************************************************ Preservation events calendar Please note that items on the "Preservation Events Calendar" are events and meetings of interest to preservationists.
