Preservation Georgia Online March 5-11, 2007 Sorry for any inconvenience, but HPD's Web site was down this past weekend while DNR server repairs were done. In this issue: Preservation tag orders pass halfway mark! New HPD reports available online reminder: Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission GCF is now accepting 2007 Renaissance Award nomination CCHS Preservation award nominees sought Preservation Events Calendar Subscription Information ************************************************************************ Preservation tag orders pass halfway mark! The latest figures show that 507 orders have been placed for the new preservation license tag! Thanks to everyone who has already placed an order and to the local preservation organizations that are encouraging their members and constituents to purchase tags. Take a moment to enjoy this success, but don't forget that we still need 493 more orders before the license plate will be manufactured. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org. Did you know that if everyone receiving this message pre-ordered one historic preservation license tag, we would meet our required goal of 1,000 orders before the tags will be manufactured? Preservation Georgia Online goes out to over 1,100 individual email addresses every week! Most of the recipients live and work in Georgia. $22 from each $25 license tag fee will go directly to HPD's Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which provides funding for historic preservation projects around the state. You don't need to wait until your tag renewal is due. It's so easy, simply: 1) Go to the license tag page on our Web site at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=327 2) Print out the form http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/assets/documents/tag_app_form.pdf 3) Complete the form and mail it with a check or money order for $25 to your county's tax commissioner their names and addresses can be found at: http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/locate/tagoffices/index.asp You will receive a receipt in the mail and will be notified when the tags become available. Your $25 will be refunded in the event that we do not reach our goal of 1,000 orders by December of this year. Thanks for your support of historic preservation! ************************************************************************ New HPD reports available online HPD's Biennial Report for state fiscal years (SFY) 2005-2006 (July 1, 2004-June 30, 2006) and the Georgia Preservation Update for SFY 2006 are now available on our Web site at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=145 Both reports highlight special projects and program activities that happened across the state. ************************************************************************ reminder: Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission In September 2006, the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor was designated by Congress to recognize the important contributions made to American culture by enslaved Africans who were brought to this country to work in the rice plantations that once existed in the barrier islands and coastal regions of North and South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Because of their geographic isolation and strong sense of community, the Gullah/Geechee people developed a creole language and preserved many elements of their African roots that remain intact today. The Heritage Corridor will enhance the preservation and interpretation of the language, arts and crafts, folklore, religious beliefs and foods that are significant to Gullah/Geechee culture. The legislation creates a Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission to develop a management plan for the heritage area. The commission will consist of 15 members, including six from South Carolina and three each from Florida, North Carolina and Georgia. Two individuals will be nominated by the state historic preservation offices in these states and one will be appointed by the Secretary of the Interior. To receive consideration for the management commission, biographies or resumes must be received by March 30, 2007. The Fact Sheet and National Park Service News Release is available on HPD's website at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=358 with detailed information on the application process. ************************************************************************ GCF is now accepting 2007 Renaissance Award nominations The Georgia Cities Foundation is currently accepting nominations for the 2007 Renaissance Award.
