Funds have been used to stabilize, repair, and plan for the continued use of structures that help connect us to the complex history of women in Georgia. Properties associated with women writers such as Flannery O'Connor's Andalusia and the Cora Harris Study are the focus of the second installment of our Women's History Month series. In SFY 2004, Andalusia, located in Milledgeville, received $20,100 for complete rehabilitation of the water tower located behind the main house on the 544-acre estate. Consisting of 14 structures, the farm complex was home to American writer Flannery O'Connor and serves as a backdrop to many of her published letters. In her short story "A Circle in the Fire," O'Connor makes a specific reference to a "white water tower," thus making the water tower at Andalusia an important element in the interpretation of the site. Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah in 1925 but moved to Milledgeville in 1940 with her parents. After receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from the State University of Iowa, Flannery returned to Milledgeville in 1951 and moved to the family farm, Andalusia, to battle lupus and work on her writing. O'Connor's works include the 1952 novel Wise Blood and the highly acclaimed collection of short stories, A Good Man is Hard to Find. O'Connor was posthumously awarded the 1971 National Book Award for Fiction for The Complete Stories. Other honors include the National Book Critic's Award for The Habit of Being, and in 1988, O'Connor's collected works were published as part of the Library of America series, a collection of America's best authors. For the SFY 1996 round of grants, the Cora Harris Study, located in Bartow County, was awarded $900 to repair the roof of the building after a tree branch fell during a tornado. Cora Harris was born in Elbert County in 1869. She married Lundy Harris, a Methodist minister who traveled for many years before teaching at Oxford College. Cora Harris's life was filled with the tragedies of two children dying young and her husband's emotional problems, which ultimately led to his suicide in 1910. In 1913 she purchased approximately 200 acres in rural Bartow County to develop a retreat. There, in 1915, she built a log building for her study. After the death of her husband, Cora wrote 14 novels including The Circuit Rider's Wife. Many of her publications were published serially in Ladies Home Journal and Saturday Evening Post, and she had a regular column in the Atlanta Journal. She was recognized posthumously as a "Georgia Woman of Achievement" in 1996. More money could be available to help save other historic resources related to prominent Georgia women by increasing funds available for Georgia Heritage Grants. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation license plate. Twenty-two dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org. 1000 tags must be ordered by before these tags will be manufactured. Current tag orders are 529. ************************************************************************ GDOT is now accepting TE project applications for FY 08-09 The call for Transportation Enhancement (TE) project applications for FY 08-09 will begin April 2, 2007, and continue through June 15, 2007. Please call 404330-6200 or visit www.atlantaga.gov for details. ************************************************************************ Marietta included on 2007 CWPT most endangered battlefields list The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) has announced its annual list of most endangered battlefields. The following paragraph describing endangered sites in Marietta is from their Web site at http://www.civilwar.org/PressReleases/PressDetail.asp?lngPressID=142 "Marietta, Ga. Following intense fighting at the end of May 1864, action during the Atlanta Campaign shifted eastward as Confederate forces occupied a long line of entrenchments from Lost Mountain to Brushy Mountain, near Marietta. Eventually, Federal forces drove the Confederates from the mountains eastward to the Kennesaw Mountain line. Today, huge sections of trenches and fortifications remain unprotected, and, in some instances, earthworks have been intentionally bulldozed to avoid complications that could scare away potential developers." ************************************************************************ final reminder: Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission In September 2006, the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor was designated by Congress to recognize the important contributions made to American culture by enslaved Africans who were brought to this country to work in the rice plantations that once existed in the barrier islands and coastal regions of North and South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Because of their geographic isolation and strong sense of community, the Gullah/Geechee people developed a creole language and preserved many elements of their African roots that remain intact today. The Heritage Corridor will enhance the preservation and interpretation of the language, arts and crafts, folklore, religious beliefs and foods that are significant to Gullah/Geechee culture. The legislation creates a Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission to develop a management plan for the heritage area. The commission will consist of 15 members, including six from South Carolina and three each from Florida, North Carolina and Georgia. Two individuals will be nominated by the state historic preservation offices in these states and one will be appointed by the Secretary of the Interior. To receive consideration for the management commission, biographies or resumes must be received by March 30, 2007. The Fact Sheet and National Park Service News Release is available on HPD's website at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=358 with detailed information on the application process. ************************************************************************ Preservation events calendar Check the Events Calendar at www.gashpo.org for complete listings by date.
