Georgians for Preservation Action and The Georgia Trust are pleased to invite you to Historic Preservation Day at the State Capitol and the Annual Legislative Reception on Tuesday, February 13, 2007. We have a great day of activities planned for you, including a boxed lunch with Senator Jeff Mullis, an advocacy mini-workshop and tour of the state capitol. This year's Legislative Reception will take place at Rhodes Hall from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Deadline for registration is Wednesday, February 7, 2007. Seating is limited for the Advocacy Lunch and Advocacy Mini-workshop, so be sure to register early! Seating cannot be guaranteed for those who do not register before the event. The schedule and registration information can be found on The Georgia Trust's Website at http://www.georgiatrust.org/whatwedo/feb_13.htm Contact Mandy Elliott at 404-885-7817 or melliott@georgiatrust.org with any questions or to request additional information. ************************************************************************ Georgia Heritage Grant funds have helped preserve African American resources Since the Georgia Heritage Grant program began in 1995, a variety of African American resources have received funding, including schools, community buildings, farm houses, slave cabins, residences ranging from high style to shotgun, and rural properties. Examples include Farmer's Alliance Hall, McIntosh County; Chickamauga Mason Lodge #221, Walker County; the Herndon Home, Fulton County; T.J. Elder School, Washington County; Beulah Rucker House, Hall County; Ashby Street Shotgun Row, Sumter County; and the Ossabaw Island Tabby Slave Houses, Chatham County. Because February is Black History Month, we will be highlighting several of these interesting and intriguing resources over the next few weeks. More money could be available to save historic resources like this, as well as other community landmarks, by increasing funding allotted to the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation License Plate. Twenty-two dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's Web site at www.gashpo.org. 1000 tags must be ordered by December 2007 before these tags will be manufactured. Current tag orders are 445. ************************************************************************ Preserve America Cemetery Grants Awarded Last week, recipients of the newly awarded historic cemetery sub-grants attended a grants administration workshop here at HPD. The one-time program, entitled "Campaign to Preserve Georgia's Historic Cemeteries" is funded through a Preserve America grant of $86,000. Clayton County, Clayton Co. Memorial Gardens Cemetery - $6,625 for a preservation plan. City of Roswell, Myrtle Hill Cemetery - $3,000 for a teacher's guide and workshop; web site development. The remaining funds will be used to produce a cemetery publication this spring and summer, which will be distributed at a two-day statewide cemetery conference this fall. The conference will be held Nov. 1-2 at the Ramada Hotel in downtown Augusta and will include tours of several historic cemeteries there. Anticipated workshop topics may address legal issues, research/recordation, cleaning/repair, cemetery plans, interpretation, and heritage tourism.
