We now have 831 historic preservation tags reserved, a big increase from 538 in the April report. Columbus (Muscogee County) is in the lead with the largest increase in orders 50 new tags. Madison (Morgan County) led with a percentage increase of 650% and advanced from two tags to 15 tags. Orders continued very well in both Fulton (still the top county with 98 sales) and Cobb, which, along with Fulton, sold 30 new plates and moved into second place. DeKalb County, now in third place, sold 15 new plates. Seventeen new license plates were reserved in Chatham County. Five additional counties now historic preservation tags reserved: Clay, Effingham, Emanuel, Green, and White. This is wonderful news and we have made great progress. However, 76% of tag orders were in the top six counties and in a large number of historic communities (including Milledgeville, Americus, Dublin, Tifton, Statesboro, McDonough and Moultrie) only have one order so far. Valdosta, Dahlonega, and LaGrange each have just two tag orders. We are very close to our first goal of 1,000 tags ordered. Hopefully, with everyone's help, we will soon see the license plates on the road at last. There's no time like the present! If you haven't ordered your tag yet, please visit our Web site at www.gashpo.org, click on the tag image, and follow the 2 easy steps at the top of the page! Proceeds from the tag fee will be added to the funds allocated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. These grants help stabilize, rehabilitate, and preserve important landmarks across the state by matching funds with grant recipients who propose worthwhile development and predevelopment projects. The bill, thanks to the hard work of preservation advocates, included reauthorization of the Historic Barn Preservation Act and a rural development program that authorizes funds for preservation and promotion of rural heritage. This session, the Barn Act has seen its ups and downs. Advocates were delighted when the program, authorized in the 2002 Farm Bill, was added in the draft bill after initially being stripped from the 2007 version. Preservation Action Board Member Rod Scott, an Iowan and self-identified "barn hugger" has worked with the National Barn Alliance over the past year, targeting members of the Rural Development Subcommittee of the Agriculture Committee with success. The Barn Act was restored during the subcommittee mark up this spring. At the end of last week, advocates learned that Dallas Representative Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) presented an amendment to strike the Barn Act from the Farm Bill. With a few hours to respond, Preservation Action, Nellie Longsworth (first President of Preservation Action now working with the Society for Historical Archaeologists and the American Cultural Resource Association) and the National Trust for Historic Preservation reached out to the Rules Committee (that considers how the bill will be considered on the floor) to draw attention to the amendment and requested it be rejected. It was. The Rural Strategic Investment Program, another preservation-friendly initiative included in the Farm Bill, authorizes $25,000,000 annually from 2008 to 2012 for the preservation and promotion of rural heritage. The bill defines rural heritage as: "historic sites, structures, and districts which may include rural downtown areas and main streets, neighborhoods, farmsteads, scenic and historic trails and heritage areas and historic landscapes." - excerpted from the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers weekly Legislative Update e-newsletter ************************************************************************ Positions available in Georgia Hay House in Macon seeks a part-time Education Coordinator to manage interpretive staff, design and implement education programs, and work with the director on grants and special projects.
