Preservation Georgia Online - September 11-15, 2006 In this issue: Former grant recipients help spread message about the tag Reminder - 2007 Georgia Preservation Awards nominations due October 20 Opportunity to host Smithsonian traveling exhibit Re-advertisement for removal of 10th Street Atlanta craftsman-bungalows Positions available in Georgia Preservation Events Calendar Subscription Information ************************************************************************ Former Grant Recipients Help Spread Message about the Tag Two former grant recipients, having experienced, first-hand, the benefits of a Georgia Heritage grant, want to share the good news. They hope to help their fellow Georgians understand how increased funding for the grant program (through the preservation license plate) would, ultimately, benefit the state's many historic properties. The Chieftains Museum, which received a SFY 2001 grant for $5,000 for a historic structures report, requested order forms and buttons to distribute at its upcoming annual membership party. The museum, located in Rome, anticipates a crowd of about 300 guests. The William Harris Homestead Foundation received a SFY 2005 grant of $10,300 to stabilize the foundation and repair the roof of a corncrib on the farm, located in Walton County. Dotty Zazworsky, managing director of the foundation, is not only distributing order forms and buttons to visiting school groups at the farm, but is also "talking it up" in Atlanta to her book club, mahjongg group, and investment club. If you are the former recipient of a Georgia Heritage grant and would like to display and/or distribute order forms, buttons, and posters, please contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or email at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org. Our current number of orders for the tag is 208. ************************************************************************ Reminder - 2007 Georgia Preservation Awards nominations due October 20 Nomination forms are now available for the 2007 Georgia Preservation Awards. All nominations must be postmarked by Friday, October 20, 2006. The nomination form can be downloaded from The Georgia Trust Web site at http://www.georgiatrust.org/preservation_resources/preservation_awards.htm or contact Mandy Elliott at 404-885-7817 or melliott@georgiatrust.org. ************************************************************************ Opportunity to host Smithsonian traveling exhibit Georgia Humanities Council seeks hosts for "Key Ingredients: America by Food", a Smithsonian traveling exhibit. This exhibit explores the traditions, innovations and technological advances in American food. Ideal hosts are small organizations (museums, historical societies, libraries, etc.) in communities of 20,000 or less. Selected host sites also receive PR assistance, $2,000 for related public programming and more. The postmark deadline to apply is November 1, 2006. For more information and to download an application visit www.georgiahumanities.org. ************************************************************************ Re-advertisement for removal of 10th Street Atlanta craftsman-bungalows The Georgia Institute of Technology, on behalf of the Georgia State Board of Regents (the Owner), is accepting proposals for the purchase and relocation of two houses, located at 318 and 328 Tenth Street, Atlanta. Proposals must be submitted on forms provided by the Owner that identify the requirements for purchase and removal of the houses from the Owner's property. Relocation and reconstruction of the houses to an appropriate site within the Home Park neighborhood, while preferable, is not a requirement for purchase. (insert photos here) Based on a historical survey of the two houses prepared in April of 2005, by Ray & Associates, the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has determined that both houses are historically significant. Research indicates that these two homes were possibly designed by Leila Ross Wilburn--Georgia's first woman architect. Also--the houses are fine examples of the craftsman-bungalow style. The houses are architecturally intact with most original features still remaining. Please contact Mike Patterson at (404) 385-0093, or E-mail mike.patterson@facilities.gatech.edu, to request a submittal form. ************************************************************************ Positions available in Georgia Savannah Development and Renewal Authority is seeking a Program Manager and a Senior Program Manager.
