Preservation Events Calendar Subscription Information ************************************************************************ SFY 2007 Georgia Heritage cycle begins Applications are now available for the SFY 2007 Georgia Heritage grant program. Funds are available for both development and pre-development projects. Pre-development projects include plans and specifications, feasibility studies, historic structure reports, or other building-specific or site-specific preservation plans. Development projects include stabilization, preservation, rehabilitation and restoration activities. Eligible applicants include local governments and non-profit organizations. Eligible properties must be listed in the Georgia Register of Historic Places. Packages have been mailed to those already on the mailing list, but applications will also available on the HPD website at www.gashpo.org by May 11, 2006. Congratulations Joey and Michelle! ************************************************************************ Georgia Places in Peril nominations due June 2, 2006 The Georgia Trust's Places in Peril program seeks to identify and preserve historic sites threatened by demolition, neglect, lack of maintenance, inappropriate development or insensitive public policy. The list raises awareness about Georgia's significant historic, archaeological and cultural resources, including buildings, structures, districts, archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. Through this program, the Trust encourages owners and individuals, organizations and communities to employ preservation tools, partnerships and resources necessary to preserve and utilize selected historic properties in peril. The 2007 Places in Peril list will be announced in November 2006. The Trust is currently searching to identify the most significant endangered properties in Georgia to reclaim, restore and revitalize. Congratulations to Oak Hill, Berry College, Rome, Floyd County ($2000) Phase I, Sunken Garden Restoration repair of stone walls and steps; Barrington Hall, Roswell, Fulton County ($1200) Boxwood Garden Restoration; Rhodes Hall, Atlanta, Fulton County ($1000) Landscape Restoration purchase of plant material; Hanover Square, Brunswick, Glynn County ($1400) Landscape Restoration of Fountain Area; Johnson County Courthouse Square, Wrightsville, Johnson County ($2400) Planting of Oak Trees Around Square. This matching grant program is funded through proceeds from the Garden Club's annual Historic House and Garden Pilgrimage. Program goals include promoting awareness of Georgia's historic landscapes and gardens, encouraging the preservation of threatened historic landscapes and gardens, and providing seed money to assist in developing sound landscape preservation projects that provide public benefit. (UNITEC), a national environmental firm, seeks an Archaeological Field Technician for immediate employment at Ft. Stewart, (near Savannah) GA under government contract. Duties: Cultural Resource Phase I survey, Phase II site testing, site monitoring, artifact analysis, curation and management support. BS/BA in Anthropology or related field plus 1 year of field experience required. DOD, GIS, and regional experience a plus. Benefits include health/dental, 401K and paid leave. Brockington and Associates, Inc., is accepting applications for field technicians (the number of which is yet to be determined). These positions are for survey, testing, and data recovery projects in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and various other locations (principally in the Southeastern US). Hourly rates are $10 to $14 based on experience, plus per diem ($65 - $75 per day). Some projects include federal wage determination and per diem rates. The positions are fulltime and likely to last at least 4 to 6 months, but there is a high potential for permanent employment beyond that. Brockington provides benefits, 401k, and health insurance for all employees. Requirements include a Bachelors degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field, plus a field school. Current students who can demonstrate acceptable experience may also be considered, and are encouraged to apply. For field supervisors, a minimum of a BA or BS in an appropriate field AND an accredited field school AND 1 year of experience are necessary. Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate CRM experience on linear projects and those who have Midwestern, Plains, and Southeastern experience. This is a temporary, full-time hourly position, with per diem, starting at $14.00 per hour for field technicians.
