Organized by congressional district, it covers preservation activities during state fiscal year 2005 (July 1, 2004-June 30, 2005). See what happened in your area at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/assets/documents/2006_preservation_update.pdf ************************************************************************ Last chance to vote for your favorite historic preservation license plate design The link to vote for your favorite preservation license plate design is up and running again at www.gashpo.org! The site will be available for voting through March 12. After the final design is selected and 1,000 orders have been placed, the tag will become available. You can go to your county tag office now and reserve your plate for just $25. Proceeds from the sale of the preservation license plate will benefit HPD's Georgia Heritage grant program, which was initiated in 1994 by the Georgia General Assembly. The program provides funding for predevelopment and development ("bricks and mortar') projects for historic properties throughout the state. In recent years, requests for grant funding have averaged over $1 million, with an average of $129,000 actually available. A successful license plate campaign ultimately will mean more money for important preservation projects in your city or county! For more information about the license plate initiative or the Georgia Heritage grant program, please contact Carole Moore, grants coordinator at 404-463-8434 or carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us ************************************************************************ Last call to register for the heritage tourism seminar in Dahlonega The Heritage Tourism Seminar Series entitled "Heritage Tourism: Putting History to Work in Georgia" is being sponsored by the Historic Preservation Division, the Georgia Trust and the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The workshops will discuss the traits of the heritage traveler, the need for authenticity, how to develop your heritage tourism product, funding sources for product development, and collaborative approaches to heritage tourism. The next workshop will be in Dahlonega, March 16-17. Go to http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=278 for registration information. ************************************************************************ Register now for Historic Preservation Commission Training in Bainbridge Come revitalize your preservation efforts in Bainbridge! May 5-6, 2006 This workshop is targeted towards those citizens who serve on a historic preservation commission as well as city attorneys, planners and staff, elected officials and anyone interested in learning how to protect their historic community! HPC Trainings can benefit new commissioners and staff and provide more seasoned participants with an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Commissions are more successful when they understand their roles, responsibilities, and the laws under which they operate, and convey a positive and professional image to their community. More importantly, well-trained members ensure that the local government is able to legally defend the decisions of its appointed boards. Registration forms are currently available online at http://www.uga.edu/gapc/training.htm. For more information, contact Jennifer Lewis at 706-583-8047 or jmlewis@uga.edu. ************************************************************************ Civil War Preservation Trust releases most endangered list On 28 February, the Civil War Preservation Trust announced its annual list of most endangered and at-risk Civil War sites. Among the most endangered sites for 2006 is the Chattahoochee River Line, which consists of fragments of Confederate and Federal River Line fortifications in Cobb County. One of the atrisk sites is the Kennesaw Mountain Line, which was among the most endangered sites in 2005. While part of the Kennesaw Mountain battlefield is protected as a National Park, it appears the park will eventually be surrounded entirely by housing developments. View the entire list of endangered and at-risk sites on the CWPT web page www.civilwar.org. ************************************************************************ Awards The Georgia Cities Foundation is currently accepting nominations for the 2006 Renaissance Award.
