Last month, HPD began distributing information on the new historic preservation license plate to Georgia citizens and preservationists. A statewide press release was sent electronically to newspapers and magazines throughout the state, and our many preservation constituent groups and organizations began to receive order forms, buttons and posters. In just a few short weeks since that time, the "media blitz" has begun to pay off. Information about the license plate has appeared in the National Park Service's Heritage News, the Columbus LedgerEnquirer, the North Georgia News--Blairsville, the Houston Home Journal--Perry, the Camden County Tribune & SE Georgian--St. Mary's, the Monroe County Reporter--Forsyth, the Marietta Daily Journal, and the Atlanta JournalConstitution. The Elbert County Historical Society also featured the license plate in its June issue of Historic Echoes. Please help HPD promote the license plate by including information about it in the next issue of your organization's newsletter. Remember that sales of the license plate will increase the Georgia Heritage Grant Fund, which may eventually benefit your community. Order your tag today and help save Georgia's special places! Go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org to order your plate now or to see what the new plate looks like. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434; email at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. ************************************************************************ 2006 Georgia Centennial Farm Award recipients announced The following farms will receive a Centennial Family Farm award on October 6, 2006 at the Georgia National Fair in Perry: William C. The Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commissions (GAPC) is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to local historic preservation commissions and design review issues for local governments. The GAPC sponsors training twice per year in the spring and fall; a different Georgia community hosts each training. The host city locations change each time so that the training can be close to different commissions around the state. This fall, they are looking to hold the training in the northern portion of the state (approximately north of Macon) and need to identify a vital and energetic host! The statewide historic preservation commission training brings attention to local preservation efforts, generates sales for local businesses and provides a way to get YOUR local elected officials, city staff and preservation commissioners to training quickly and easily! As a bonus, the host city receives seven (7) free registrations for the HPC training. In 1871, Moore became involved in the construction and operation of a cotton and gristmill in downtown Acworth called the Moore and Cowan Cotton and Flour Mill and purchased 30 acres of land outside of town to build his house. In 1880, Moore produced nine bales of cotton and 100 bushels of corn on his 30 acres as well as owning over 2,000 acres of land in Bartow County that was farmed by tenant farmers. Moore died in 1907, and his daughter Annie owned the house until her death in 1936. The Tarlton Moore House is significant in the area of architecture as an excellent example of a Gothic-Revival cottage in Georgia. The Gothic Revival style is rare in Georgia with less than one percent of the single family houses in Georgia Historic Resources Survey designed in the Gothic Revival style. Character defining features of the Tarleton Moore house are the steeply pitched side-gable roof, two steeply pitched gabled dormers on the front faade with arched tracery windows, heavy window hood molds, and central entrance with transom and sidelights.
