The reception offers preservationists the opportunity to voice their concerns about preservation. Be sure to remind your legislators to attend. This year's reception will feature HPD's new courthouse exhibit and public leadership awards to three Georgia legislators. ************************************************************************ HPD staff news On February 8th, Jeanne Cyriaque, HPD's African American programs coordinator, will be presenting a Georgia perspective on the "State of Historic Preservation in the African American Community" at the 25th Anniversary Conference on African-American History & Culture in Nashville, Tennessee. The conference is sponsored by Tennessee State University and the Metropolitan Historical Commission. Registration is $15 and includes lunch and a commemorative booklet. For more information, call 615-869-7970. ************************************************************************ RFPs sought for Sapelo Island project Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society, Inc., hereinafter referred to as SICARS, is seeking proposals for historic preservation work on the wood frame Farmer's Alliance Hall, ca. 1929. This historic structure is located in McIntosh County, Georgia on Sapelo Island, accessible only by state ferry boat and barge leaving from Meridian Dock. Farmer's Alliance Hall is a centerpiece of a traditional African-American community, located within the Hog Hammock Historic District. This district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 6, 1996. http://www.sapeloislandgeorgia.org/rfp-farmershall.html ************************************************************************ Your Town Your Town: The Citizens' Institute on Rural Design is a leadership initiative funded by the National Endowment for the Arts that responds to the design needs of small towns and rural areas. Check out their new Web site at www.yourtowndesign.org ************************************************************************ Scenic Byways seeks images for new promotional materials Scenic Byways is requesting high-resolution images that are in the public domain of historical and cultural activities, places, and faces that can be used for new collateral materials. The site, people, activities need to be on or near a Byway (see www.bywaysonline.org for scenic byways in your state). Scenic Byway's tagline is "Come Closer" and using photos with people experiencing what the byways have to offer would be very helpful. You must identify the location and the Byway for each image. All of the byways have byway leaders and marketers who would welcome new images for the www.byways.org website on a continuing basis. Send your images to: Patricia McNally, Marketing Communications Director; pmcnally@byways.org ************************************************************************ Grants The application process for grants from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) can now be completed entirely online (as well as via email and mail) by using www.grants.gov. The site offers instructions on how to register to use its functions and search and apply for grants. Information about five recent grant announcements is also on the NHPRC website. The National Park Service invites proposals for FY2006 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) grants. NAGPRA is the federal law that provides a process for museums and federal agencies to return Native American cultural items to lineal descendants, culturally affiliated Indian tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations. Two types of grants are available: Consultation/ Documentation Grants are awarded annually and range from $5,000 to $75,000. Deadline is March 1. Repatriation Grants of up to $15,000 are awarded on an ongoing basis.
