The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Department of Natural Resources, Georgia's State Historic Preservation Office, has begun the process of updating the state historic preservation plan. The plan establishes the priorities and policies to guide the Division's preservation efforts for the next five years (2006-11). As part of the planning process, we'd like your input in our online survey. Go to our Web site, www.gashpo.org and click on the link: Attention-give us your input for a new state plan! Wednesday, November 30 is the last day the online survey will be available. ************************************************************************ NTHP case studies: adaptive reuse of former houses of worship Historic churches and other religious buildings are often landmarks in their communities. Preserving these buildings after the congregation disbands or moves to a new building can be a challenge. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has compiled a dozen case studies of communities that have successfully adapted former houses of worship for new uses, keeping them as community treasures. To read these case studies visit www.nationaltrust.org/issues/houses_of_worship/success_index.html ************************************************************************ Volunteers Needed to Help Rebuild Historic Neighborhoods Heritage Conservation Network seeks volunteers as the organization finalizes details for a series of hands-on building conservation workshop in hurricane-ravaged sections of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and New Orleans. Beginning January 2, 2006 and continuing weekly through at least March, workshop participants will get involved first hand in preserving and repairing houses in historic districts, working with a technical expert and alongside local residents. No preservation or construction experience is necessary, just a desire to make a difference and an ability to work hard. Groups are particularly encouraged to participate. Participants must pay their own travel expenses and a minimal fee to cover housing, food, and insurance expenses. Complete details are available from the HCN website at www.heritageconservation.net/workshops.htm. HCN is working in association with the Neighborhood Story Project, the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans, the Preservation Trades Network, and Architecture for Humanity to coordinate this relief effort. They hope to bring in a crew of 10-12 volunteers each week to help rebuild people's homes and businesses and their lives. Heritage Conservation Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of architectural heritage around the world. Through a network of technical experts, volunteers, and community members, HCN aims to increase the effectiveness of preservation efforts at the local level. ************************************************************************ SCAD students to help endangered historic cottages in Mississippi The complex of structures was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August. A team of students from the Savannah College of Art & Design will be onsite to conserve architectural fragments of glass and curly maple from the Charnley Cottage, which is currently off its foundation. The owner of the Charnley Cottage and guest cottage is unable to initiate a restoration and has decided to sell the property. The building's future is threatened by the impending debris removal schedule (December) mandated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Please see www.savewright.org and www.mississippiheritage.com for more information. ************************************************************************ New additions to the Preservation Events Calendar Check the Events Calendar at www.gashpo.org for complete listings by date.
