Registration information will be available in February - please contact Martha Marcille at martha_marcille@dnr.state.ga.us ************************************************************************ Ossabaw Island excavations will reveal details of daily slave life and rare 19th century slave cabins will be restored The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Historic Preservation Division and The Ossabaw Island Foundation are sponsoring archaeological excavations on Ossabaw Island, located near Savannah. The excavations are being carried out jointly by DNR and The LAMAR Institute, a non-profit archaeological research consortium. DNR and LAMAR archaeologists are uncovering information about the lives of enslaved African Americans on the North End Plantation and revealing construction details of three tabby slave cabins. The cabins are being restored by The Ossabaw Island Foundation through funding from a Save America's Treasures grant administrated by the National Park Service, Department of Interior; The Robert W. Woodruff Foundation; The Charles Evans Hughes Memorial Foundation; the State of Georgia; and actress Sandra Bullock, an avid preservationist. Neel Reid Prize The fifth annual J. Neel Reid Prize is an opportunity to apply $3,500 toward the independent study of classical architecture anywhere in the world. The J. Neel Reid Prize is intended for an individual relatively new to the field of architecture, such as an architecture student, an architecture intern or a recently registered architect. Priority will be given to applicants residing, studying or working in Georgia. Deadline for receipt of applications is Feb. 28, 2005. Applications for and information about the J. Neel Reid Prize are available at www.georgiatrust.org or 404-885-7802. ************************************************************************ Civil Rights in Sumter County documentary on PBS Briars in the Cottonpatch, The story of Koinonia Farm, a documentary by Faith Fuller, daughter of Millard Fuller (Habitat for Humanities) will be broadcast on PBS TV in Georgia on February 27. "The film follows Koinonia Farm, located in Sumter County, from its humble beginnings in 1942 to the present. The residents of Koinonia Farm radically believed in the equality of all people. Whites and blacks worked and lived together as equals on the farm when segregation was the law. During the late 1950s, residents faced down acts of violence, persecution and terrorism." Learn more at http://www.briarsdocumentary.com/ ************************************************************************ FEMA's Pre-Disaster Mitigation program FEMA's Fiscal Year 2005 Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) program will provide funds to states, territories, Indian tribes, communities, and colleges and universities for hazard mitigation planning and the implementation of mitigation projects prior to a disaster. Approximately $255 million is available for competitive grants, technical assistance, and program support. Applications for the FY 2005 funding cycle must be submitted to FEMA by March 14, 2005.
