The survey was conducted by members of M.A.R.C., Marine Archaeological Research & Conservation, a Florida-based volunteer dive group and coordinated by Jason Burns, underwater archaeologist for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division (HPD). Burns will speak about the findings from the Rome survey at the Rome Area History Museum on November 9 at 7:00 pm. A viewing of a 32-minute video of the survey, including underwater footage of the Dixie Steamboat site, will follow the talk. This event is open to the public free of charge. A national competition recognizing outstanding residential rehabilitation projects in the United States, it honors homeowners and professionals for their dedication to the ideals of preservation, as well as for their commitment to excellence in rehabilitating old houses. The program is co-sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Old House Journal. ************************************************************************ Grants Restore America: A Salute to Preservation is a partnership between the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Home & Garden Television (HGTV). In 2005 Restore America will focus on the revitalization of places where people live, through grants for residential projects. Nonprofit organizations and public agencies are invited to apply for grants. Approximately 6 to 12 grants will be awarded for projects such as rehabilitation of single family residences or adaptive use of historic buildings for housing, creation of upper-floor apartments in Main Street communities, or restoration of Save America`s Treasures sites that continue to have a residential use. The purpose of the Hart Family Fund for Small Towns is to assist small town preservation and revitalization initiatives around the country, with a focus on towns with populations of 5,000 or less. The Fund will operate within the framework of Preservation Services Fund grants same application, same eligibility requirements, same match requirements, same deadlines. The first grant round for the Hart Family Fund will be February 1, 2005. Over the years, national parks, NPS program offices, and our partners in the public and private sectors have co-sponored dozens of diverse undergraduate and graduate students and provided them with outstanding career-exploration opportunities. The cost of selected intern projects will be shared on a 50/50 basis. The deadline to submit project proposals is Wednesday, December 8, 2004. The project is expected to last approximately two weeks, and will consist of systematic shovel testing within a linear corridor. Individuals interested in working on a part time basis are also encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to local applicants with survey experience in the Georgia Piedmont, however per diem may be available for qualified non-local applicants. Wages will be based upon experience.
